Hi All. My names Jake, I am new to the forum and would like to pick your brains on something. Problem: The ABS light came on a week ago. And a little history: the truck has 114,000 miles. The truck is a 2003 Ranger FX4 4.0L. I've only seen this light come on once before, that was about 6 months ago and my front left wheel bearing failed about 20 miles later while on the interstate. Needless to say, that bearing assembly is replaced. After the abs light came on a week back, I had it hooked up to a diagnostic computer, which threw 2 codes. It was saying that both the front right and left abs speed sensors were bad. I jacked the front end up, tried rocking the wheels and there is no play to indicate a worn wheel bearing. I also went for a long drive and measured the tempurature of the hubs with an infared thermometer. both were around 110*. No unusual noises while on the road either. The thing that gets me is that both the right and left abs sensor went bad (according the the computer) at the exact same time. What are the chances? could it be an issue elswhere further up the abs system? has anyone experienced this? Thanks.

 

If you do any water or mud crossing with the truck sensor may go bad. Also,not quite sure of winter weather conditions down in illinois (winter road condition), but salt on iced covered road can affect the connectors.

Also, remove wheel, caliper, pads, disc to get acces to abs sensor. Remove said sensor to see the condition of the abs ring inside the hub assy; if broken or full of gunk sensors will not get correct lecture of abs ring

 

thanks ianyboy. I took the wheel, brakes/rotor and dust guard off and pulled the sensor. When I looked down the hole with a flashlight, I could see the teeth of the ring. It looked like the areas between the teeth were filled with grease. The grease was clear/gray if not a little bit blue. Is that the correct color for the grease inside wheel hubs? I didn't see any metal shavings, but my sight was limited to a small area. there was also clearish grease on the end of the sensor, I wiped it off before replacing. I've yet to get it back on the road, as I still want to do the same thing on the other side.

 

wheel bearing grease can be of many colors. Ive mainly seen red, blue, amber. Maybe the company that make the wheel bearings/hub uses a gray grease
