ranger4.0,

How’s the shifter coming along ?

Was thinking on this after Taylor posted his T/C Shifter Thread.

Aftermarket is always a nice change (in most cases)
But custom is always best.

My current Hurst setup involves a custom extension that I fabbed up from scratch.
I couldn't be happier with it.

My t-case setup will also be custom.

custom shifter for Ranger 5 speed

I just replaced the shift lever on my '96 Ranger 5 speed. This is the Mazda M50 transmission. I used a piece of 1/2" stainless steel round stock. I machined the one end down to 8mm and threaded it, then cut the end off the original shifter and tapped it out to fit so I could install the original ****. I cut the old lever off the "socket" and welded the stainless shaft on. It is 1.5 inches shorter than the original with the **** positioned 1.5 inches further back and .75 inches to the left. I don't stuff my thumb into the cigarette lighter any more when going for first. Without the rubber isolation I get a bit of gear noise, but there is NO comparison in shift feel and quality. Like a totally different transmission. I found a leatherette shift boot with a 1/2 inch hole at the wreckers - can't remember what it was from - perhaps a BMW? and used a couple "bulldog" paper clips to fasten it to the consolet/cupholder from a '98.

One other thing I did at the same time was put the mirrors from the '98 on in place of the "seal flipper" '96 mirrors and the inner door panels (with pockets) as well.
Now I have cup holders and map pockets as well as mirrors that don't get knocked out of position every time someone walks past within 2 feet - - - Just fixed the wiper control switch too - and put the lighter socket back into the dash since I won't be knocking it out with my thumb any more - - - Almost 370000km on it now and still going strong

i have been throwing around the idea of using a large chrome wrench or big snap-on screwdriver as shifters. i really love the look of the chrome hurst arms with the white ball **** but im not going to pay that much for them.

curious to see what others have done!
I got a chunk of stainless steel shaft, made it a bit shorter than the stock shifter and bent it back a bit so I'm not stuffing my thumb into the lighter socket in 1st ot 3rd. I cut the old shifter off and welded the new one on, threaded the end to fit the original shifter - was thinking of the Hurst 8-ball or Cue-ball **** but the original '96 Ranger **** looks good too.
