redesigning the Door Arm Rest...
Alright, so I think it is finally time for me to redesign the arm rests on the door of my 99. The problem I have is that the arm rests are NOT large enough for my elbows.... like they need to stick further out from the door.
Anyone else having this problem? It is a big problem for sometimes it ticks me off so bad bc I can't keep my arm up for like a minute w/o it falling down again. 90% of the time my windows are open and I just stick it out the window, but its akward with the two hands not being across from each other on the steering wheel plus now it is winter...
So has anyone ventured into this beforE? I am thinking I will make the frame with plywood and then foam/cloth over it.
Insights? Ideas?

just out of curiosity, which door panels do you have? the ones with map pockets? if you don't have those, i'd suggest getting those and go from there.
If it were me, i'd get another factory armrest off the same style door panel, cut/trim until you've got your perfect size, then fiberglass the extention of sorts to the old armrest and spray on some paint. i'm all about making it factory looking.

Shane. Yeah, I do have the panels with the map pockets... Whats the difference btwn the 2? (haha besides the obvious) Do the pocket styles have different arm rests?
I'm right there with you about making it look factory! I was going to start from scratch and do my own, but you lost me on what you were saying...why would I trim the ones I have if I want them to be bigger? but I am considering the idea of fiberglass instead of cloth...

anthony....if your arms slide off your current panels, you would HATE trentins. lol.
design is differnet between the two. rather cheap looking imo compared to the XLT panels.
Your armrest is attatched to the panel via phillips screws. add a spacer between the panel and the armrest. the spacer should be thick enough to make it comfortable enough for you. then glass in the differnence. kinda get what i'm saying now?
before i sorta didn't make sence. lol.....taking and cutting an extra armrest, mold it to the existing one....too much trouble.
i'm just spitting ideas out there.

Haha yeah thats what I was thinkin... I saw Trents and he was talking about not having the map pockets. But Trent, yeah I do have manual windows and locks...but sorry bro, thats a no go haha
OK I see what you are saying now, that makes sense. Thats a good option i like that idea. What else u got?
My only fear with this project is that by extending that rest out farther that the current screws wont be enough/strong enough. (ie me pushing my arm down would create a moment that could not be supported) That is one of the reasons I was considering a total redo bc then I could drill and tap a couple more holes in the door panel and have a few more mounting points.
