The easiest was to remove your shifter **** without damaging it is to take the shifter out of the truck, take it and pull the rubber boot down just a little from under the ****. Then find a size wrench that fits over the metal stick but still catches the bottom of the ****. Next grab a big hammer and have you bench vice ready to go. Take the wrench back off and lay it and the hammer next to the vise so you'll have all your tools together. Now go in the house and run a container of nothing but the hottest water your fauset puts out. Take the **** end on the shifter and stick it in the hot water for a minute or so. Then pull it out, clamp it in the bench vise, slide the wrench back on, and give the side of the wrench a big whack. This will make the **** pop right off undamaged.

If this isn’t done yet, either go Hurst or find a way to weld on a bolt with the correct thread size needed for the new ball.
Don’t forget the Jam Nut under the ***** so leave a little length on the bolt for that too.
In the long run and since the shifter will be out of the truck anyway get it welded up.
