Replacing rear-view mirror with aftermarket mirror? MOUNT/BUTTON question
Hello, I have a 2007 Ranger XLT. I want to replace my very ordinary rearview mirror with something like a Gentex 313 or Gentex 453, with Homelink and compass.
My question is not about how to wire it (yet, lol).
Nor is my question about how to remove the stock mirror. I haven't done it yet but I'm pretty confident after doing some research that I can remove it safely.
My question is about mounting the new mirror onto the existing button.
It seems like these Gentex mirrors, which sell for pretty reasonable prices on ebay, almost always have what I would call a universal mount. It's not truly universal of course, but it seems as though such a mirror could be mounted onto the buttons of many different makes of vehicles made in many different years.
From what I can determine, my truck ('07 Ranger) has a unique button upon which these mirrors would NOT properly mount.
So my questions are these:
1. Am I wrong? Could these mirrors mount onto my button just fine? (If so, I guess the following questions don't matter?!)
2. Does anyone make an adapter that fits onto the Ford button and can accommodate the "universal" mount I think is needed? (I don't want to remove the button--it's just not that important.)
3. Is it considered an appropriate "best practice" to buy a new button (for the replacement mirror) and glue it onto the original button?
4. Is there a mirror on the market sold anywhere with Homelink and a compass that is specifically made for the button I have?
5. Any other thoughts, ideas, or suggestions about any of this? Of the posts and videos I've found that are even in the neighborhood, none of them specifically address this point about non-matching mounts.
Thank you!!
