exhaust type question..

exhaust type question..
i'm trying to get a good sound out of my stock exhaust..tonight i unbolted the back half including the muffler, right behind the cat converter and it sounded damn good..kinda like a small v8..i was wondering if it's safe and efficient. would it be alright to take it off there, or should i cut it right in front of the muffler and have about a foot of straight pipe?
i apologize if this has been answered but i HAVE searched and not found all the info i'm looking for.

Assuming this is a 3.0/4.0...
If you want loud, go with straight pipes. Saw off your muffler. Cheap, loud as hell, and relatively safe. However, expect lots of 'burping' an crackling when revving it high, IMO straight pipes don't sound good on a Ranger.
It's probibly best to use a muffler of some kind. It won't be as loud, but it's safer, and you'll get a warrenty. Flowmaster 40's sound very nice, it's what I have and I think it's a notch above the others. Not so much good for performance, but if you're like me and love the tone, go with a Flowmaster.

Same B3000 with Flowmaster

i'm going with the magnaflow dual kit, and i already have the magnaflow high flow cat in the garage.. cat was cut out before my time with the truck, so im just going to stick the o2 bung back in with a cut to get it all right again.. exhaust is about to rust off the truck anyway.. might replace it now LOL

i'd say flowmaster or magnaflow si/do setup or even borla if you can shell out the bucks for them. a si/do setup will give the truck a deeper and somewhat louder tone and you won't sacrifice alot of low end power. you can run them out the back or dump it right after your choice of muffler. doing it this way will be somewhat loud inside the cab but if you don't mind that, then that's the way to go my $.02 -Mike-

i had a straight pipe on my old 4.6 f150... since any muffler i had would always get ripped off over speed bumps :) and it lost alot of low end power...
if ya want a different sound for cheap($20), go to pep boys and buy a cherry bomb turbo 2 muffler... on my f150 it made it sound deeper but not loud and crackling (til it got tore off ha)
