Transmission swap Finally started

Alright so ive been planning this for a few months now ever since my torque converter started whining.

So that said heres the parts list:
Transmission- LKQ $750 M5R1 49,000 miles on it with 2year 24,000 mile warranty pulled the top cover and it looks new inside great deal.
Pedal assembly- $106 new from fairway ford.
RockAuto.com-
Flywheel- $48
Clutch kit- $103
Master and Slave assembly with throwout bearing and pilot bearing- $145
SCT tuner with custom tune to delete automatic components-$400 from Fred at Rogue performance nice guy quick turnaround
flywheel bolts- $12
factory shifter and floor Plate with rubber seal- $105 shipped from junkyard in Kentucky.
Aluminum Driveshaft longer for manual- $50 from junkyard in Missouri
still looking for pressure plate bolts i really don't want to go junkyard for hardware like that but no one carries them anymore if anyone has some or knows a thread pitch and size id appreciate it also looking for a slip bolt for the shifter the junkyard one i have is missing.

Trying to get this done in the next few weeks before the cold gets here.
if anyone has ideas or suggestions feel free to chime in.

Looking at around $1800/1900 total not to bad for a swap of this nature.
Also i will have some of the auto parts for sale after if anyone is interested.

The swap is in and everything works except the speedometer it reads about 20mph to high. Anyone know how to adjust this I've had suggestions of the super lift correction device or pulling the needle and put it back in the right spot while driving at 60mph. anyone have any suggestions?

Just a couple pics I've since removed the auto shifter just need some new column plastic and blanking plate and to fix the speedo and it will be done.

looks great! did you swap the pcm? If not id guess that is the culprit as far as the speedo goes.

No i had to keep it for the vin to match so it would pass emissions my tune guy tuned out the auto components so no check engine light I've got a few ideas to trick the speedo though but may end up swapping the pcm anyway. I'm hoping i can use the true speed thing from super lift to fix it.

Good progress!

Yeah I can't figure out why the speedo would be off. All '01+ trucks take their speed signal from the same spot. Assuming you swapped in a '01+, there shouldn't be any issues. Might be PCM programming? I don't know.

What'd you do for wiring at the trans?

Thanks guys! The only thing i did was splice in a speed sensor pigtail i got from the parts store to the output speed sensor. but i noticed the auto had two but the manual only has one maybe thats part of it but but the super lift box is looking better it takes the PCM out of the calculation so I'm thinking thats the easiest fix.

Got the speedo fixed after lots of tweaking with the tuner i had to make it think it had 4.30 gears and 900 revolutions per mile on the tires seems extreme since i can't adjust it any higher with the tuner but now its dead on. Thanks to everyone with input on all my questions the last few months the wealth of info made it super simple to get everything working.

And for fx4wannbe01's question the trans was out of a wrecked 07 or thats what the vin on the LKQ tag said i found out the auto had two speed sensors and it takes some kind of average i guess and the manual only had one. But its good to go now. Took about 2 hours of tuner tweaking and test driving to get it straight.

Finally got all the interior pieces finished pics to come! used a 98 mustang column surround to get rid of the hole from the auto shifter also has no push button key release hole since i didn't bother to swap that over never had anyone try to pull the key out in 11 years doubt it will happen now lol and i couldn't find a cluster blanking plate so i just removed the needle and sprayed all it black. You'd never know it wasn't stock unless you read the vin! OEM swap complete!

Nice!

I might have a cluster plate if you're still looking for one.

Do you know if there is a major difference between the 2x4 and 4x4 manuals? I'm thinking I'll want to do this once I pay my '11 off.

parts wise not really you just have to buy the 4wd version of the trans which i saw more of those floating around than anything talk to a tuner before you do it and make sure they can write a tune for the '11. I used Fred at rogue if it can be done I'm sure he can handle it. Also you probably won't need the driveshaft as 4x4 uses the same one on auto or manual.

Good to know on the driveshaft. I figure if worst comes to worst, I could call up Rusty Acres in Jax and get a ecm from them. That was my plan with my 89 crown vic, before I wrecked it.

Yeah only reason i had to keep mine is so VINs match for emissions. But good luck man its really not bad once you get rolling but id definitely suggest an extra set of hands for putting the new one in.

I was told that to pass emissions you cant have a CEL, I didnt know that the VIN had to match up with the transmission. Is this really true? Can I not just get a ECM (w/ PATS) to fix the CEL?

I did not know that the VIN of the truck had to match the Computer. How can i fix this?

Depends on the state sorry it took so long to reply I'm not active with the ranger community much anymore. But some states are stricter GA had an issue a few years ago with people plugging in the vin of their car that wouldn't pass and then plugging into another car of same make and model that would pass so now some states actually read the vin off the pcm I think 01 and up rangers had vin flashed to the pcm but don't hold me to that year.

Also doing the swap

I am in the middle of the same swap on a 98. Is there a separator plate between the engine and transmission. Got in a hurry with my donor rig (97) and didn't pull the flywheel since I needed the 8 bolt. Is there a spacer? Should have taken pictures. Just installed the transmission only to discover the starter (from the donor) won't bolt up. I've pulled it back down and am trying to get a friend to check and see if I missed it. Donor rig is 200 miles away. Also a part number in case they can't find it.

What engine? There is a dust shield between the engine and transmission, but that shouldn't affect the starter that much. If you have a 4.0, the starters are different between automatic and manual. On the 3.0 they're the same. Not sure about the 2.3/2.5 engines.

I have the 4.0L. I am going to try running the ecu from the 97 donor. If that doesn't work I'll send the 98 ecu out for reprogramming. Can I unplug the module for the transfer case. I am going to use the mechanical lever from the 97. I am going to wait for the plate to keep everything sanitary. I drive exclusively on gravel/muddy roads. If they can't find it I'll work on modifying the auto plate.
