Best Buy
First off No offense to to Peter (2003stealthedge) who works for them.
My wife and I went in last night to purchase a big screen TV, cash in hand and ready to buy, we knew exactly which one we wanted. It was on there website advertised at $2600. It is a JVC DLP and as we were approached by a salesperson I told her which one I wanted, she said they were out of stock and kept walking. First off how does she know without actually checking? So I stopped another salesperson he checked and said the only one left was the one they were putting on display, not on display yet, so I said I want to buy it. He said they couldn't sell it because it was a display model. I asked him to show it to me on display he couldn't. So I asked for a manager and was told they were having a meeting. I went up front and asked a Cashier to page me a manager please. A manager walked up and I apologized for pulling him out of his meeting he said he wasnt in a meeting with a confused look. I replayed the entire scenario for him. He said he couldn't sell it unless I got a service plan. I was like well I am getting a service plan, just not through best buy. I can get them where I work cheaper and they cover the same thing. He flat out refused to sell the item to me. I argued with him that I was not asking for a price break since the unit had never actually been on Display. I just wished to purchase the item and take it home. He said NO loudly. It was my turn to get rude. But I didn't. I calmy asked for his GM in which he responded he is on vacation, as I was leaving I was asked if I had a pleasant experience. I was like no sir you people are unwilling to make a sale. This guy was like I am the GM and we are always trying to make a sale and keep our customers happy. He asked what the problem was and I told him, he said the assitant manager handled it the correct way and the only way they can sell a "soon to be display model" is with the warranty plan. I was like I don't want a warranty plan, I want a service plan. He was like yeah thats what I mean. Nope wrong. Warranty only replaces it if it is defective. Service plan that I can get at Compusa where I work covers accidental breakage, surges, lightening strikes and more.
So bottom line is I came home without a TV. Some maybe wondering why i don't go somewhere else, well in Jackson Ms no one else has this particualr TV and after reviews and next door neighbor having one I am in love with this TV and they paid $3500 for theirs. $2600 is a steal.

yeah i'm the assistant manager at sears in the electronics department and best buy pretty much sucks here too..if you don't know anything about what you want best buy is the wrong place to go to...the people they hire know absolutely nothing and since they get paid hourly, the don't really have to make the sell like i would because i'm commission...
there's only 2 people that i trust there from thewhole staff and one of the guys actually lives in the same neighborhood as I.
one time i went on to get some Yamaha tower speakers for my theater and the guy i asked told me point blank that they wouldn't sound any louder than my micro speakers i had at the time even though they 3-way towers, were bigger, and had a much better sub and frequency responce...at the time i believed him, but 30 seconds later, common sense kicked in that he knew nothing and bigger speakers make a big difference. Just yesterday, my parents went to get an mp3 player and they told them while i was on the phone that it didn't come witha charger to recharge the battery, they had to use their laptop to charge it, which makes no sense at all, and he tried to tell them they needed Napster dollars to get music because thats the only way to put it on there...Completely retarded
however i must say that if we were putting our last tv on display we wouldn't have sold it either regardless if you were buying the warranty or not. we need our tv's on display so other people can buy it. We would've just ordered it for you and you would've gotten it in like 3 days...we would have been more professional about it though...
honestly, we have that tv too but it's the model below it, the gray and black one, and the only thing your're paying for on the black one is PIP. I'd look at the 56" Toshiba (56HM195) DLP, 62" Mitsubishi DLP, or the 60" Sony SXRD (LCOS projection), if those are in your size range. The toshiba dlp, mitsubishi, and the sony will have 1080p, firewire inputs, and all but the sony have PIP...those are better alternatives to the JVC and they have more useable inputs, up to 8 in most cases. The 61" Samsung DLP has PIP as well as the Sony LCD projection A10 or A20 series will be other good alternatives but the sony doesn't have PIP.
The sony, samsung, and SXRD Sony are the top three sellers in my department...i'd recommend those. we raraly ever sell the JVC's becasue they don't have enough inputs and the others look better when you compare them

heres how best buy works and no offense taken whatsoever. Best buy hires 16-17 yr olds fills every dept with them. They stroke these kids egos to sell sell sell and tell that one day theyll be a manager cuz there so good and wat not and these kids will do anything and everything to sell you the wrong ****. Then when the kids dont make the sale its their ***. Best buy makes millions off of 16 yr olds selling the wrong ****. Honestly its one of the worst companies to work for ever.

My brother had a cd player installed by them and when he got home it didnt work. they stripped out a bunch of screws and the wiring was all messed up. the speakers wires werent connected to the matching speakers. so when you fade it left or right front or rear it would be all the different directions. then they were gong to charge him to take it out! I hate that place... but i have $110 in gift cards there from christmas.

i dont think they were...i've never heard of a company who's policy is "if you want the display you have to buy the warranty.." The bad thing about this is that he didn't want a discount for opening the box and him showing the tv to him. he was willing to buy it. i would've sold it to him, but he didn't come to Sears, he went to BEst Buy. They were jerkin' him the whole time. If he wanted to be smart all he had to so was say let me see it in writing...
We won't sell the display at all unless the person is in dire needs to get it, becasue there could be 6 other people within that weekend that want to see it and order it. If you wait until 2 days before football season starts to find a tv it's your fault not the stores.

Call 1-888-bestbuy i just read what that manager did. You CANNNNNNNNT force anyone to buy anything with a service plan thats inboarding and if the distract staff found out thats a final warning write up or possible termination. I would definately call the best buy corp number and complain they will give you a deal. Trust me

the particular one they were looking at came with the charger...i've never heard of an mp3 player you can only charge with your computer...kinda renders the point of the battery useless...

Thanks for the input guys. I have called the number Peter and filed a compaint, they said they would be in touch with me within 10 days. They have to talk to the store and get info and ****.
Justin - If they would have offered to order a new one I would have taken it. They didnt offer I didnt ask.
You also said "We won't sell the display at all unless the person is in dire needs to get it, becasue there could be 6 other people within that weekend that want to see it and order it. If you wait until 2 days before football season starts to find a tv it's your fault not the stores."
I agree. But normal "non retail customers" do not view it this way.
As for your suggestion on the other Models well if we had a decent store around here with decent employees then I'd be able to compare them. But I am in Porr-dunk Mississippi where there are no big electronic stores, its either Best buy or Circuit****ty.
Not a big choice

thats crazy, my local BestBuy ( not that I really like them) Offer up the Display models with a discount even if there are more in stock. I 'm not sure how they go about "soon to be on display" items. Must be management differences
Man, If making a $2600 + tax + accessories( possibly) sale is nuthing to them, then you should get that Televizzle for free.

I sometimes have the non-consumer view when i shop, but i also have to realize that you have to be realistic. Like this past Christmas when people wanted the IPOD NANO and waited until the last day hoping they'll get lucky to get one.
Not happening...we had a lot of mad customers, but what can you do but say sorry (you should know).
BTW: Circuit City has all of those TV's i told you about if you don't have a Sears. They usually are cheaper too. We price match them all the time

Clay. What you described is Best Buy and it's been that way for years. They don't have the front page supercheap items in stock and they don't know when they will. I tried for 4 weeks straight to get their $499 laptop. If I went on Tuesday, they sold out on Monday. If I went on Monday it sold out on Sunday. I got to the point that I was there when they opened because it was gonna be on their ad on the front page, which it was. This wasn't during the Christmas season either. I ended up getting a Dell.
They don't want the customers that come in to buy the front page items and don't spring for the extended warranty and they (as a corporation) have no problem letting the customers know that. There was a business article where they stated they sort their customers into Angels and Devils. This is no joke as corporate was quoted in the article.
The angels:
get the new stuff at the hi price and replace it when the next new stuff comes out.
Buy service plans
Buy all the accessiries while they are there.
The devils:
never buy service plans.
never buy anything except loss leader front page items.
never buy accessories.
How you are identified determines how you are treated. Like I said, I read this in a respected business magazine. If I am offbase I apologize.

clay that really sucks hearing what they tried to put you through. hopefully that company thing you called will help ya out and get some stuff straightened out for ya.
my aunt went through the same b.s. this past fall buying a 60" ...except they started sending my aunt to different stores to pick it up, and this and that... finally my uncle took over that purchase, dealt with the b.s. himself, and swears they're done with best buy.
