Guys i need help here with buddy's tranny

Ok, here is the deal, My friend has a 2000 Ranger XL 2.5 automatic. His tranny went out (passing gear and reverse and he has to manualy shift through gears for it to work). So we soent saturday taking it out. His GF had a 96 tranny (2.3 motor) that we put in it only to find out that the plug-in where the shift linkage connects is different (it looks the same until you plug it up). So he went out and bought a used 2000 tranny. we got it in last night no problem. all the bolts are conected, all the plugs are plugged in, the torque converter is bolted up (pain in the ***), fluids filled. I talked to him today and he said he cant get it to go into gear at all! WTF. It is a used tranny so it may be bad, but it looked too good in shape to be bad. I just dk what it could be. Any ideas or suggestions?
