Front suspension in trouble!

I have a 2001 4.0 Ranger Edge.

Recently i took my truck to my mechanic and he said that I'm going to need new upper and lower ball joints and control arms for the front end and soon! the price he gave me was pretty steep ($1135.75) and i was wondering if anyone knew of any kits or packages around the internet that i could buy and save myself some cash. Also if anyone knows any good videos or tutorials on how to do it yourself i would really appreciate it! Thanks everyone!

Ball joints aren't that bad to replace if you have a good set of tools. You should be able to rent a press from your local auto parts store. That's really the only special tool that you need. As for the control arms, are you saying that you're going to replace the uppers and lowers?

Gotcha. Well if I were you I would get moog upper and lower ball joints. It's a little extra money but they are definitely worth it. The moog uppers come with an upper control arm too so you don't have to worry about swapping ball joints out of the existing upper control arm.

For your parts, I HIGHLY suggest looking into RockAuto.com. And get MOOG parts. It's been a long time but the numbers don't lie....quoted about $450 in parts alone locally for Moog parts. Shipped to my door from RockAuto was about $250. This was back in 2008 so prices may have changed....or gotten even cheaper. This was the case when I destroyed a lower ball joint and needed to replace it last year.

If you are on a tight budget here is a kit on ebay. Now I can not guarantee the quality of the parts in this kit because of the price and the fact that they are more than likely cheap Chinese made parts. But for $175 you can get both lower ball joints, both upper control arms, and both inner and outer tie rod ends. Like everyone else I recommend using Moog parts as well. That's what I did earlier this year, installed all moog components in the front, lower ball joints, upper control arms and inner and outer tie rod ends. If you look around on the internet you can find all this stuff for real cheap. I think I paid $220 for everything shipped to my door by buying the stuff off ebay.

And don't forget to get an alignment after you replace everything.
