Torsion Bar Tech Articles

Ok, I am trying to understand our front suspension better and am looking for articles around the web to get a better understanding on torsion bars. Feel free to add links to good articles you find.

Let me begin:

Cool thought of the day:
"Basic" and "off-road use" go hand-in-hand. Of all the types of springs you can find on a 4x4 the torsion bar uses the most basic design. Throw in the fact that our country's M1A1 Abrams battle tanks use torsion-bar suspension and they start to sound like the perfect spring for off-road use don't they?

what dont you get about torsion bars?? they are really quite a simple concept.

A torsion bar is a solid bar of spring steel which is connected to the car chassis at one end, and free to move with the suspension at the other end. The spring action is provided by the steel bar's resistance to twisting. On Rangers, there is a short arm at the rear of the bar with an adjuster bolt that allows height to be corrected or changed.

This is a generic torsion bar set-up. It is not a picture of a Ranger but it is similar in principle. The torsion bar is keyed to the lower control arm of the suspension.
