Hey guys, well there is this NASTY metalic noise coming from my front drivers side wheel.. I cant figure out what it is.. The best way i can describe the sound is it sounds like you are jumping on a springy mattress that squeeks.. Its metal on metal. its really starting to bother me, and its getting worse.. It stops when i slam on the brakes, but as soon as i let off the brakes and start driving again, its there.. Any ideas? Could it be the wheel bearing?

oh and the cv shaft seems to be fine, so does the u-joint.. I have NO idea what else this could be..

 

It is either your wear indicator on your pads telling you to change them or a really really bad wheel bearing. I would check you bearings for play and any play at all replace them.

 

well i just replaced the pads, so i dont think that its them.. And how do i check the bearings?

 

yeah just looked up wheel bearings on jchwhitney.. 140 bucks! and its wanting to give me the whole hub assemble.. cant i just replace the wheel bearings and not the whole hub?

Your talking about the bearings inside the rotor correct?

 

well, not exactly INside the rotor, but inside the wheel hub i do believe

 

I just replaced my rotor, and the bearings that sit inside the rotor/hub the part that sits on the spindle, I got at checkers. You need a new rear seal for each rotor, and the bearings were pretty cheap.

 

It could be the anti-rattle clips attached to the caliper or the ones the pads ride on that are on the bracket. I had this problem with my neighbors 98' ranger. He also need new pads too, but 2 of the clips one on a caliper and one on the bracket was broken and riding on the rotor and would do what you are describing.

 

He has a 4x4 ranger so his bearings are captured and have to be replaced as a unit. Sorry man you can't just replace the bearings inside you have to buy that whole unit. Look it up on Auto Parts Fast at RockAuto

ya i'd replace the whole hub assembly. even tho this is a different truck, on my dodge th hub asmb. went out on the pass. side, sounded like there was somthing in the breaks and it did the same, stopped when i put the brakes on etc..but then it let loose and my pass tire was almost in the top of my fender. imo, change it ASAP!

 

wow.. yeah, i guess ill have to replace the whole hub assembley.. The only thing is this is my dd and i will have to wait for the shipping.. Cause the $160 part in the US would probably be 200+ euro here.. guess ill have to order it lol.. may have to drive the wifes jeep around for a week

this one comes as a pair, but dont know if its the one i need. it says it fits 4X4 models with 2 wheel rear ABS and pulse vacume hubs.. Dont know...

 

It all depends do you have four wheel abs? If so you have to get that specific one with the abs sensor and do you have vacuum hubs? Information information.

Also the timken ones will last a long time. Longer that the ones you are posting but it all depends on how deep your pocket is.

 

dumb question, how do i know that i have 4wheel abs? i know that i have abs.. The abs light came on the other day lol.. But it went away when i restarted my truck.. do they all come in pairs or are the timkin ones just one? it doesnt really say...

Look on the back of your steering knuckle you will see a sensor thats bolted to the back that is the abs sensor also look on the rotor and you will see the exiter ring.

 

I don't think this has ever been said, but you can check if your bearings are bad by jacking up the front and end and seeing if you rock your wheel by grabbing the top (meaning you try to pull it out from under then car then push back in).

If you have any play at all, it's the bearings. And yes, as stated you will have to replace the whole thing. And yes they are pricing for 4WD vehicles.

And to answer you questions about the Timken being way more, I think they are just known as a very high quality bearing, so probably more expensive.

 

Someone will chime in on this and tell you how to find out. Im not quite sure. I know we all have rear antilock brakes and if you have a sensor up front in the back of the spindle (a.k.a. instead of the brake line there is also another line running to the front hub.) you have 4wabs but don't quote me on that. But trust me there is a reason camburg uses timken bearings in there long travel suspensions!

 

well i remember us doing that, (we were checking soemthing else) and there was no play.. Hopefully it isnt the bearings.. i dont really feel like droping 400 bucks lol.. I really wanted to get a new alternator.. my dad thinks its the brakes.. im taking it to the shop tomorrow and gunna have the mechanics check her out..

 

Well, took the truck to the auto hobby shop today.. Took off the front wheels.. Checked the bearings.. bearings are fine.. THANK GOD!! lol.. the noise that i was hearing wasnt coming from the front wheel after all.. It was coming from the back..

There was a piece of the drum hardware( the piece that keeps it from auto adjusting?) was just rattling around.. It had broke loose.. So, took that part out since it isnt an operational part of the brakes and whala.. no more sound lol... But i do need to get new hardware for the rear brakes.. Owell..
