front driveshaft/transfer case question

so Ive been having a noise happening from take off... sounded like the front of my rear driveshaft. my dad and I checked it out lastnight and found the rear u-joint was toast... replaced it, then after checking around underneath we noticed the front driveshaft where it meets the transfercase has about 1/4-1/2 inch of play in it if you push and pull up and down... my stupid question is thats not supposed to be like that right? dad's ram dosnt do that but I wasnt 100% sure about it. Thank you
