Hey! I just bought my truck used, it's a 2002 XLT 4x4 4.0L.
Our roads here finally melted back to pavement, and now I'm hearing what could be tire noise (I have Hurcules tires on there).
I checked the rear tires and they are scalloped pretty bad.
What might have caused this uneven wear? Too much running in 4wd?
Not rotating enough? Crappy Tires?
I'd like to get a set of BFG ATs to replace, but that'll have to wait, and I don't want my truck EATING good tires if there's something I can fix.
A mechanic buddy of mine suggested I wait until the weather warms up, then go to the mall's back lot on a sunday night and do brake stands to smoke the tires even again. HA!
I'm just worried that my truck will eat any new tires I put on.

You need to get an alignement.

Well, I just got the truck, I've only put like 1000 kms on it.
I don't know if the dealer did a proper alignment before I bought it, or even rotated the tires.
the ones that are worn are on the rear, and I thought that an alignment issue would scrub the fronts.
I think I'm just gonna put up with the noise and see what other stuff happens to my tires over the next couple of months ... it'll give me a better picture as to what is really going on.

 

That is a very stupid idea. If your tires are wearing bad go get the issue fixed. Tires are not cheap and unless you want to roast the set you have now go get an alignment. You can get it done for under $40.

Get an alignment. If its aligned they shouldnt charge you.
If it's screwd up, it will get fixed and you wont be wasting tires.
You have to do it either way, might as well do it now

 

If the rear tires are screwed... they were either rotated before you bought it and your alignment is screwed up... OR... they weren't rotated and you got serious problems in the rear of your truck... a rear solid axle should not wear tires like that as it has no toe, camber, or caster adjustments.
