1994 Ranger transmission issues..

So i recently acquired a 94 ranger that was converted from a manual to an auto.. im pretty sure they used a transmission out of a newer ranger because half of the transmission electronic inputs are not being used. Anyway the issue I'm having is its kind of like a gokart. I only have 2 gears to go forward and both are pretty high but its the gears that i can manually change it doesnt change on its own. Just wanting to know if theres anyway to get it to shift properly as only having 2 high gears is putting a lot of stress on the engine when going up hills or starting from a stop. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the forum

1994 2.3l Ranger would have used an A4LD automatic
On the drivers side of transmission it will have a 3 wire plug-in(shift control) in front of the shifter, then a 4 or 5 wire plug on top of shifter(reverse lights and Neutral switch), and then 2 wires toward the rear with Speedometer cable, VSS sensor

1995 2.3l Ranger would have a 4R44E automatic, 16pin plug-in(shift control) in front of shifter so big difference there

When some one does a Manual to automatic swap or an automatic to manual swap, they MUST also change the computer
Manual computer can not shift an automatic

The A4LD and 4R44E look exactly alike because they use the same outside case, only difference would be the 3 wire plug or 16 pin plug

4R44E 16 pin plug seen here: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums...29-jpg.312602/

A4LD seen here: https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.ran...1abe0cae3.jpeg

Okay mine is the 4r44e. So I would need to get a computer and wiring harness from a 95 in order for it to shift properly?

No, unfortunately with a 1989-1994 2.3l engine you can't use a 1995 and up computer,
1994 was last year for the EEC-IV 60 wire computer
1995 got the EEC-V 104 wire computer
For the 2.3l engine Ford redesign the front of the engine for 1995 and used a different crank sensor, and there is no retrofit or conversion

Did they just swap in the 4R44E or did they swap in a 2.3l engine as well with the 4R44E
You can look at the front right of the engine down by the crank pulley for the External Crank sensor, used on 1995-2001 2.3l/2.5l engines

Looks like this: https://www.explorerforum.com/forums...age-jpg.89404/

If its a 1989 to 1994 2.3l then you will see an ICM(spark module) on drivers side lower intake like this: https://www.autozone.com/znetrgs/rep...3f8021b7f1.gif
Can't miss it has connectors at top and bottom

Your best bet if it has a 1994 2.3l and computer is to get a 2.3l A4LD transmission and sell the 4R44E
Then see if the 1994 computer is for automatic, if not get one from a wrecker

Or just do a V8 swap, lol

It has the 94 2.3. Guess I'm just gonna deal with it being slow as hell until it's done or I get another. Thanks for the help I really appreciate it.
