Broken center bolt
Broken center bolt
Broke the harmonic balancer bolt on my 96 ranger 2.3 . just wanted to know if anyone knows what tap size to use I've called Ford and they said it's a discontinued part so they can't help. Hoping one of you guys can save the day

Not sure what good a "tap" will do?
If bolt is broken off in the crank then you can't re-thread with a tap
You can get reverse drill bits, and use a reversible drill, to drill out the broken bolt.
Using a Reversible bit and drill will often unscrew the broken bolt as you drill, because of the vibration and grabbing of the drill bit in the Reverse direction.
But in any case you end up with a hole in the bolt you can try an EZEout on.
Start with smaller drill bit and then go to larger drill bits until bolt unscrews or you have a big enough and deep enough hole to use an EZEout on

All you need to do is measure part of the broken bolt, the outside diameter is well... the diameter of the tap you need. Then you need to figure out threads per inch which is easily done with a pitch gauge that you can pick up for a couple bucks at most hardware stores. Or in a pinch take a ruler and Mark off exactly one inch of threads with a paint pen. Then count threads.
diameter plus number of threads per inch is your tap size. For example 3/4" x 12.
