E-brake not working

Just purchased a 06 xlt manual and the seller informed the ebrake does not work. There is no tension so I’m guessing the cable somewhere is snapped, does anyone have any good instructions on replacing/fixing ebrake? Or, how much it would cost to fix?

Welcome to the forum

First step is to look under the truck on drivers side, just under the rear of cab
The e-brake cable runs from the Pedal on the outside of the frame rail so easy to see
Its connected to two cables, one for each rear wheel at that point
It looks complicated but not really, called an "equalizer" because these connections allow the 1 cable to apply "equal" travel/tension on the 2 cables going to the wheels

Have someone push down on the pedal to see if the one cable is moving, and pulling on the other two cables
If not then the one cable end has broken off in the pedal assembly, so you need a new cable and need to pull the pedal assembly off to re-thread it

If cable is moving but seems to be too long, stretched, then you can get a cable tightener, just a hook that can bend the cable a bit to shorten it

If everything looks OK then the e-brakes in the wheels are probably worn out
If one of the 2 rear cables break there would still be tension, and both breaking at the same time would be a longshot for sure, possible but long odds

Cost depends on whats wrong of course, and the labor rates in your area
Mobile Mechanics can be cheaper, no shop rent

Rear brakes generally run $200-$250
