ELM 327 obd2 reader?

Hey, so I recently bought a 2010 ranger to replace my 98 that blew a radiator, and subsequently, a few other things. Anyway, I have this cheap scan tool that worked great with my 98. It does not work with my 2010. I know it doesn't work with a lot of newer vehicles. I know it supports all of the protocols, but given the price that I paid for it, I'm guessing that it's not all there. I kinda like having it, because it will interface with my aftermarket radio for realtime data while driving, but now i'm trying to cope with the idea that I won't have that functionality. I was wondering if any of y'all had any luck with an elm 327 adapter in a newer ranger, or if i'm just going to have to break down for one of those handheld readers. Thanks for any suggestions!
