I was driving back from Cape Canaveral this spring break and I got off I-95 and noticed my truck didn't want to go over 60 or so. I thought it kinda peculiar but then thought I might be running out of gas (common symptoms for my vehicle). Filled up, still had the problem. At first I thought fuel filter so I dropped by Advanced and threw one in. NO PROBLEM, got back on the highway and didn't have a problem till three days ago. I was going up a hill and truck started sputtering again and not wanting to go over 60 and would rapidly decelerate. I think my fuel pump is gettin a little old and needs replacin'. I thank anyone with any ideas,

it could be something in the fuel lines also, maybe try some line cleaner. you are probably right on the fuel pump though.

 

I'll try the line cleaner. What is the difficulty level in installing a fuel pump??

 

I don't exactly know what year your Ranger is but I'm assuming it's in your gas tank and can be easiest accessed by removing the (6) T-55 bolts on the bed and pulling the bed back a couple of feet. Just make sure to disconnect the wiring to the taillights and the three 6mm screws holding the filler neck to the bed.

I own a '93 XLT I thought I made a sig but apparently not. I'll take a look at what is required to either drop the tank, or just pull the bed back. While I'm at it I could probably just replace the bed entirely.... get rid of the one with ENORMOUS dent in on the left rear fender a 2008 Ford Edge said hi to a couple months back. Okay well lemme try that cleaner first and then i'll see how it goes. Any other ideas???

 

Well the only other things you can check are the relay under the hood in the black box drivers side by the cowl, and the actual wiring going to the fuel pump. You can check the relay by swapping out the one next to it providing it's good.

Pull the fuel filter back off and drain it into a clear glass. Look for any signs of debris or water mixed in with the fuel.

 

lol. Yeah thanks for the info on the relay...... your about a year late on the advice though. I was having those problems December of '06 with this truck (dear God I can't believe its been that long). After paying the mechanic $60 to replace a $10 part... well lets just say I've been doin my own mechanic work ever since. Yeah no, it aint a problem with the relay, could be the wiring though. I'll check that. But that's gotta be it right?? can you think of ANYTHING else that might pertain to the fuel? Do you have any tips on dropping the tank or removing the bed??

 

Hmmmmm..... I hated putting the fuel filter on the first time, it's impossible getting away from the squirting fuel... you know... the stuff that aint too heat compliant. No I'll give it a try, I'm assuming if there is any debri in, could probably be something in my tank???? Maybe faulty gas, or someone dumped a treat in it??

Sorry about the relay information.

It's by far easier to remove the bed then hobble around under the truck trying to remove the tank. There's just six torx bolts that need to be removed, unbolt the filler neck, and unplug the taillight harness. Get a buddy and move the bed back about 2 feet and you're there.

I replaced mine a couple months back now, but now that I think about it while I was there I should have grabbed my compressor and blew out my fuel lines.
