Last try before it goes to the dealer
My 2011 Ranger 2.3l with auto trans bogs down about 3500 rpm, it starts pinging and is really bad at 5000 where it maxes out. There is no codes. Changed the spark plugs, new air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump, MAF sensor, MAP sensor, cleaned PCV valve. Check for vacuum leaks with both carb cleaner and propane. Vacuum at idle is 18-19, at 2000 rpm it drops to around 5. The TPS reads 17% at closed and 94% wide open.
Is there some limiter I'm missing? |
"Vacuum at idle is 18-19, at 2000 rpm it drops to around 5"
Reads like clogged exhaust Put vacuum gauge back on hold RPMs at about 2,000, any steady RPM above 2,000 is fine, watch the vacuum gauge, if its slowing dropping you have a restricted exhaust Other tests with vacuum gauge have engine at idle with vacuum at 19 Blip the throttle(open it all the way and let it snap closed) Vacuum should drop to 0 then come back up above 19 then back to 19 INSTANTLY If there is a drop to say 2 and then a slow return to 19, restricted exhaust You can pull out upstream O2 sensor and start engine, it will be loud See if Vacuum tests go better, if so confirms clogged exhaust |
Thanks Ron,
I'll try and check the vacuum tonight and hopefully pull the O2 sensor this weekend. They didn't make it easy to get to. |
Ron,
I pulled the inlet O2 sensor and drove around and on the highway. Yes it was loud. RPMs and torque were back. The MAF sensor had higher readings too. I'll change out the catalytic converter system next week. Thanks bunches. |
Good work :biggthump
Thanks for the update and the "thanks" |

The motor has about 92,000 miles on it. The new cat system cleared up the trouble.

92,000 is early for cat failure.... |
Could leaded fuel do this?
To csaguy: Did they charge you for the fix (was there a warranty)? |
