Mortor Shell in my Ranger

I thought the Title would get your attention. OK so I知 new to Rangers in fact I知 new to Fords. I took off the Air tube that goes from the air cleaner to the intake manifold and I found inside, some kind of air restrictor (it looks like a mortar shell, but plastic and hollow after the pointed end). I would upload a picture if I could figure out how. But my question is what is it for and should I put it back in? I drove the Ranger around the block and every thing seems good.

I have only ever seen one of those, and that is yours. I guess whoever had my truck before me pulled it out. The guy before me was all about engine mods, while Im about off roading. If I had to guess Id say it is a silencer.

I think that might have something to do with how the air flow is directed(possibly better fuel economy???), but you don't really need it.

All it is is a silencer because people don't like to hear noises from their engine. Even the rangers today have silencers in them but they are just doing it differently. In or out wont make much of a difference, but it's out now so just leave it that way heh. Mines been out for probably 5 years or more.

leave it in and you'll get better gas mileage, take it out and you'll lose 1-2 MPG... tested this on mine when I had it, even noticed the same with my new 3.0L I was only getting 18, now I'm getting 20!

I have a 97, and mine had that. I gutted that out. It took a few minutes, i used wire cutters, pliers, and alot of fanageling. To me, it makes for better flow, with a nice whistle. When you do manage to get the piece out, you should end up with a big empty football lookin piece. Put that baby back in there and your good to go!
