Mode $06

2000 Ford Ranger 2.5L

Can anyone tell me what I need to look at / repair for these codes?

Mode $06 test fails:
TID$10 CID$21 - Bank 2 switch-ratio and max. limit - Catalyst
TID$41 CID$11 - Delta pressure for upstream hose test and threshold
TID$41 CID$12 - Delta pressure for downstream hose test and threshold

21 references the downstream O2 sensor, the one behind the Cat Converter, although it should read sensor 2, not bank 2, a 4cylinder engine has no "bank 2", so could be meaningless code

11 and 12 reference the DPFE sensor

Mode 6 codes don't mean much unless you have "Regular" codes set, they are there to confirm if a monitored system has a problem

Thank you RonD!

The regular code is P1506. After changing and cleaning many sensors and parts (that relate to this code), could this be the sensor that would bring the idle back to normal and take away a foul converter smell?

P1506 is a Ford specific code, just FYI, ANY OBD2 code that starts with P1 means if manufacturer specific, not a generic code with are P0

Ford
P1506 - Idle Air Control Over speed Error

What this means is the computer can not control low idle using the IAC Valve
It could be a failed IAC Valve but more likely a vacuum leak

Easy to test IAC Valve
When you start cold engine idle should be about 1,100rpms
Then it should slowly drop as engine warms up, after 8 minutes or so it should idle at about 650-manual trans, 750-automatic

If this doesn't happen then IAC Valve could be bad or stuck

After engine is warmed up unplug the 2 wire connector on IAC Valve, RPMs should drop to about 500 or engine may even stall
If RPMs do not drop then either IAC valve is stuck or you have a vacuum leak

Remove IAC valve and plug in its wires
Turn on the key
IAC Valve should now be open all the way
While look inside at the valve unplug the wires, valve should close, it only moves 3/8" but DOES move, then plug it back in and it should open again
Repeat as much as need to confirm its moving or it isn't
Replace if it isn't moving

IMPORTANT: you can only use Motorcraft IAC Valves, no other brand will work reliably, so go to a wrecking yard to get a used one or buy a new one

None of the Mode 6 codes apply to the P1506 code

Thank you for that information! Very helpful after realizing my new part could be faulty. Unplugging the IAC valve on a warm engine didn't create a change. I also removed the IAC valve and watched for movement with the key turned and got nothing.
I ordered the Motorcraft IAC Valve - Auto Zone sold a faulty product!

A few questions:
The fact that the Mode 6 codes don't apply to the P1506 code would mean they're side effects of the original cause?

Should I be using this brand for all parts I buy for this truck, or is this the case for this part in particular?

What would be your process in replacing a vacuum hose to the firewall? It's a line that goes to the heater control valve solenoid. It was cut at first then completely pulled from the firewall. If I move the reservoirs I still cannot see under the black canister where the line attaches. I dropped the glove box but no access. Is there another way?

IAC Valve and TPS(throttle position sensor) seem to be Ford specific, 3rd party brands sometimes work but.............not all the time

Another is the fuel pump, Motorcraft pump is 3 or 4 times the price of 3rd party, but stay working, but this is more a users choice as 3rd party pumps DO WORK, but you may have to install a warranty replacement 1 or 2 times to get one that last more than the 1 year warranty, so save the receipt, lol

Most other 3rd party parts are fine
