Much gas!
Welcome to the forum
You should have a misfire?
Could be stuck open fuel injector, floods out its cylinder(misfire) and then fuel runs down past the piston rings into the crankcase
Fuel Pressure Regulator(FPR) on the engine, has a vacuum hose attached, if FPR leaks then fuel is sucked into the intake manifold, when engine is turned off fuel pressure keeps pushing fuel into the intake and it runs into an open intake valve, down past the piston rings into the crankcase
Those are the only 2 things I can think of

Ron,
Sorry but have trouble finding where the box to ask new question; you've always been helpful.
I tried to change my fuel filter on my 2008 2.3. When I finally got the front fitting off the old filter, there were 2 "O" rings and 1 plastic ring that came off with it. I tried removing the other fittings off the old rusty filter. I decided to put it back all together. I may have replaced the rings in the wrong order ( Im sure these should not have come out) ,,, gas leaked all over when I tried starting it. "Stopped"
A friend suggested I change the lines and filter to a generic in-line style; considering but there are two going into one !
Q: Is the fitting shot ? ( i did not remove the two other fittings).
Q: what do you suggest ?

2002 and up Rangers use the 2.3l Duratec engines
Up at the top on the left there is an Icon "new thread" click it
Reads like you pulled the connector apart
Video here of what should have happened when changing fuel filter: youtube.com/watch?v=Kwat8xKEVOc
You may need to get a new fuel line, these nylon fuel lines don't repair well, they leak
1998 and up Rangers use up to 70psi fuel pressure, so fuel lines need very very good connections
