Sporadic idle surging, lack of power, stalling
Hey guys,
First time post for me here so If my post is wrongly located let me know.
Anyways, I picked up an 02 2.3 2x4 a few months back for relatively cheap. When test driving it it was apparent there were a couple issued but i thought i could give them a go. The truck has some phantom symptoms i can't seem to track down. Sometimes when i start it, the RPMS will surge up to ~2000, hold there for a few seconds then drop down to 700 or so, this is normal as far as i know? (correct me if im wrong) and then sometimes proceeds to surge between those two values. When this symptom is happening i can push down on the gas and there will be little to no response. If i put it in gear at this point the truck bucks like a bat out of hell. The throttle issue, or lack of response also sometimes acts up while driving, and can come on sporadically after driving some distance. When i notice this issue arising i can simply clutch, turn off, and turn on the ignition while on the go and it seems to fix the problem and the truck is totally normal again.
I thought these symptoms might be fuel delivery related. There have been several codes over the last few months which indicate that type of issue, for example, bank 1 running too lean, TPS inconsistent with MAF sensor, another one for improper voltage to MAP, and a couple more i can't remember off the top of my head. After a bit of research I decided to start with the easiest approach. I checked the spark plugs (as the coils have been replaced) and there is a fair bit of oil in my spark plug tubes. I purchased the valve cover gasket but have yet to dive into that project, Instead I tested the TPS with an ohm sweep test and it seemed fine, I also cleaned the MAF, replaced the MAP, replaced the TPS, IAC and PCV valve.. these replacements seemed to have chased away my problems for about 500 kms or so, until recently the symptoms came back. Now, here in BC the temperatures are dropping and my battery doesn't want to hold a charge over night, when i boost the truck the issues seem to be there more than they are not. I have also run some injector cleaner through the tank as a hopeful fix...
I know this is a lot of information kind of just spewed out but if anyone out there has some insight i would greatly appreciate it.
