Time for a clutch..Help me out?
 

Well, the time has come in my truck's life to get it's clutch replaced..It's slipping horribly, and I get paid tomorrow..Hopefully I can at least buy the clutch tomorrow if anything, but I've got a few questions..I have a '97 XLT, 2.3L...Any recommendations on what clutch to buy..Like specific model/brand? And how about putting it in..I'll need help doing that, and I don't want to charge a mechanic to do it, because I need to learn how to do this stuff on my own..Little help here ;s

Ford factory... I know they have made updates on mine since the 2004 model year, and it comes with the slave (at least mine did). For the price ($250) you can't beat it...

For the $250, is that installed, or just buying the clutch and getting it handed to me in a cute little box?

LOL... Clutch, slave, alignment tool... Labor is going to be 400-600 bucks...

they did me extremely right with my new LUK factory clutch from them....for $199 i got a clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, alignment tool, and slave cylinder.....

Ok, I forgot some stuff, mine came with all that too....

Hm...I'd like to learn how to install it myself..But geeze, rumor has it they are a serious PITA, this be true..?

And Maurice..By looking at that eBay store, they don't have a complete kit for me..I've got a '97 2.3L, I can't find it :\

Best luck I found was just the master cylinder with and w/o line..Sounds NOTHING like what you two kiddies bought :(

EDIT: It's not like I need something super expensive, or top of the line..I only need to get it replaced, then my 02 sensors, then it's getting the For Sale sign..Looking to get the exact same truck, just extended cab..I hate my regular cab :p

any how to's? i have the exact truck. and would like to know the difficulty and work involved in doing it. because either way im doing it myself.

Well, thanks to Maurice, I'm going to leave the eBay window for the clutch to my truck open, and tell my mom about it..I get paid tomorrow, and I've got 6 hrs of overtime, compared to NONE, so hopefully I can order it..Then once I do get it, I'll convince Maurice to give me a walk through...Hopefully :)

i will give you a walk through......it isn't that hard....hardest part is dropping the tranny...

Me and my brother in law will probably do it..I first told my mom that I could probably find someone on here that I could meet up with and have them help me do it..She blew up, basically saying that I was going to get kidnapped by one of you..I was like mom..If anything, they'll steal my truck, not me. its not hard, jus really is a PITA if you dont have a lift...which i luck out and have acess to to 3...rather then that jus get the tranny out...or buy a hanes manual thats what i did...give your torgues and everything

if you got a lift and a trannie jack its a piece of cake. a few tips very long extensions are your friends, dont let the clutch sit on the alingment tool because most likely it will break, evenly tighten down the pressure plate and dont be in a big rush because that is when you will start to screw stuff up.

key advice from both of you. what can i use to improvize a tranny jack? (Scizzor style jack?)

no its a well here..this is a tranny jack..expenisve to buy for a one time job so ask around and see if you can rent one or borrow one from a friend...

Shouldn't be that much of a problem..Well, actually, approx. how much does the transmission in my truck weigh..? Hell, if anything I'll just rig something up to make a regular jack work ha.

dont know...200 lbs give or take a few...2 people can get it out but holding it up and getting to bolts started straight is the problem...if your doing it on the ground then yes a regular jack will be ok jus make sure you have a 2x6 or something on the jack to help distribute the weight and bungie cord it to keep it from slippin...if your using a lift then a regualr jack will have to be on a table or something and that will turn out to be right in the way...but 2 or 3 buddies its no big deal just dont strip the holes out...and take your time

I did one of my trucks last spring, I used a Brute Power clutch kit by Borg Warner.
It came with clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing. I bought the slave and master separate. The clutch kit was around $150, The slave was something like $65 and the master was about the same. I got everything local since the need to repair came about suddenly.

On a '94 4x2, like mine the job was fairly easy, I did it on jack stands with a floor jack laying on some cardboard. It took longer to bleed the clutch than to R&R the trans.
The worst part was getting the bellhousing past the crossmember under the rear of the motor and being able to see when it was aligned going back in since I did it by myself.
I suppose I'll be doing the other two trucks soon, they are all around the same miles and all are showing signs of hydraulic problems. Since they all have over 100K on them, they will get a complete clutch kit. I'd rather do it ahead of time rather than wait for them to start slipping and cost me new flywheels.

If its not too late (older thread) the tranny is actually pretty light. When it came time to position my new one last year I used a bar across the shifter hole in the interior and raised it up with a ratchet strap. It got me close enough to do any little adjustments under the truck myself.
