Using coolant

Don't know where my coolant is going to. Was told that if water pump is bad that I could see it leaking at the top at the hole in pump. I see nothing in that area. Was also told that it could be water gasket in head. What should I do to figure this out? I do smell the coolant but no water on floor board in cab. I have replaced the cap on radiator. Any help with this is more than appreciated. Thanks! Tom Majors Jacksonville, Florida

Check your oil. Make sure it doesn't look like chocolate milk. Is there constant steam coming out of the exhaust, especially when it's warmed up? Constant bubbles in the overflow tank? Do a little googling and perform a coolant system pressure test, or at least the rubber glove test.
