1993 3.0 Throttle Position Sensor Problems (Code 121)
Hi I’ve got a 1993 Ranger Splash with the 3.0, and manual transmission. I’ve done some intake mods to it, ‘00 Taurus manifold and ‘99 Mustang V6 throttle body. I’ve seen a guy on YouTube do the exact same intake/TB swap (The Vulcan Channel) and I’m pretty sure he used the TPS sensor from the old ranger intake on the new TB. I am doing all that he does to make sure my car works with the setup, but my ranger is throwing a code 121 (closed throttle voltage higher or lower than expected) and the Idle is Around 1000 and the engine doesn’t idle down properly (like between shifts). Sometimes it’ll idle down normally but almost die, maybe 400rpm, then go back to 1000. It could be another issue I’m battling at the same time (MAF Sensor) but I’m guessing this is the problem. Does anyone know how I could find what the volts should be reading with the TB fully closed, then fully open, and how I would be able to clock the sensor to where it works properly? Maybe I can cut the factory Ranger TPS connector and splice in the newer connector so I can use the original TPS from the Mustang TB?
This explains some stuff perfectly, the only problem is my Ranger is a 1993, so the connector is different. I’m thinking of just getting a newer connector from a junkyard and splicing that in so I can use the TPS sensor that is meant for this TB
Isn't there a manifold form a Taurus with a 60mm throttle body? I thought that's what "Vulcan" said in his videos, that was on a composite intake?
yes, the 2004 and up intake manifolds are all composite and come with a 60mm, but the problem is that it needs tons of modification, and there’s a little flap inside it that flips open at like 4000 rpm for high end power, then it can flip back to low end power. Rangers don’t have the harness to control the flapper, so you either have one or the other. The 2000 model year ONLY Taurus came with a aluminum intake that is styled just like the newer ones, but came with a 50mm, but since it’s aluminum you can port it. It also does a little better high end than the composite ones.
