I'm not sure what size nut is holding the pulley on (other than it's a big one) but since I lack an impact wrench, I found searching around that the best method is to remove the alternator, use a crescent wrench on the pulley to hold it in place and then manhandle the nut off. That being said, does anyone have other ideas on this, and or, know what specs to torque the nut holding the pulley back to?

I saw that point :) Guess I need to get a rubber strap wrench at the autoparts store... every mod seems to result in my buying another tool. Funny how that works out.

if you don't need the stock pulley, you can man handle it by gripping the pulley with channel locks. It is very easy to unscrew by hand once it is loose. One or two good whacks with a hammer on the wrench or socket will get it loose. Trying to loosen it by just pulling with the hand would be difficult.

Also, taking the whole alternator to a local shop should be very inexpensive, if not free.

 

what about the reinstall whats the best way to tighten it down

 

I'm going to wait till the meet tomorrow to try and get these pulleys installed. I can't loosen the darn things with the belt rotating...I need the extra hands to hold things down.

and a got a small strap wrench at the house ill bring with other tools

 

I'm pretty sure the nut gets tightened as the motor is running. You should be ok to tighten as best you can with the belt installed, then let the motor do the rest.

The new tensioner pulley is working great...and my squealing issue is GONE!

 

I hope tomorrow we can get the alternator pulley changed out. That one seems to be a royal pain in the **** to remove...perhaps a bunch of truck guys can get it off

 

not a problem we will get it done one way or another

 

i think its the "other" way taht bothers him

 

So long as the truck will operate correctly when I leave, that is my main concern
