Hi Guys,

I was changing my oil yesterday and I noticed a small oil leak comming out of the bolt where I drain my oil at under the truck.



It's pretty small but noticiable and I want to get it fixed asap. Is there anyway to plug this up? It seems like it's leaking through the threads somehow...

Please help

On my truck I noticed that someone use silicone to try and seal up my drain bolt.

 

How about teflon tape around the threads?

 

No, that's not a good idea because it could get into the system and not for an application where you will be loosening and tightening every 3k miles.
It could be because it isn't tight enough too.

You need to order a new bolt. If it is just seeping through then I wouldn't worry about it until you get an oil pan bolt. Your bolt should have a built in rubber o-ring in it.

I made sure it was tight as hell on my last oil change which was last night. So I guess I got another 5k miles to go before I can change the bolt out otherwise I'll waist all that brand new royal purp I just bought :)

If I order a new one does it have a built in rubber washer around it? Or should I buy a metal washer and just use that?

 

Naw, I think the new one you ordered should have the rubbery thing on it. If you use a metal washer, I would think that it could still let oil leak in between to peices of metal.

Silicone is not the answer. I had a 1991 F-150 and half of the oil pan gasket was sticking out of the side of it. There was a 1/4 gap. The guy before me squirted a bunch of silicone in there to keep in from leaking. That did not fix it.

 

You could also just go down to your local auto parts store and get a new o-ring for it. If the bolt is not tripped or damaged in any other way, I would just match up the o-ring and buy a package of them for like $2 and just replace it as needed.

Isn't "Never-Seize" a grease based substance that has aluminum particles in it? I would not want that in my oil.

That is not what I was thinking of, I meant that blue stuff you put on the threads...
Never sieze is a bad idea, and I don,t think it will seal anything.

just buy a new drain plug.. you should be good, and watch out for the oil pan gasket leak if it hasn't happened already.

 

the OEM oil pan gaskets of rangers are crap, the new revised gasket is much better and won't turn to paper mulch after 80,000 miles.. I'd say just replace your drain plug, they around $5.99.. at lets thats what we charge here at lincoln dealership
