catylitic converters

hey i was just wondering on my 08 ford ranger i was wanting to put some high flow cats on it. the problem being that i was told that there is some kind of fancy cats on it already and that i cant put any high flow cats on my truck. if anyone has any answers to this and possibly knows where i might be able to purchase these that would be great. i appreciate the help

The stock cats flow enough. You will waste too much money swapping them out and gain nothing. I'd only change them out for Magnaflows if mine where bad.

has anyone done a back pressure test on the stock catalytic converters? as compared to high flow cats? if no one has than nobody would know whether it were beneficial or not. high flow cats dont cost that much money to buy

you really don't need to change them unless they are bad. Like Christian said, Magnaflow makes a pre-made Y-pipe with the cats, but you are looking at 600-700 just for the pipe, then you have the cats that are post-Y-pipe-pre-muffler...

Here is one thing you are forgetting. This is a truck 3.0 with crappy flowing heads, crappy flowing exhaust manifolds and a crappy DD cam. Unless you plan to port and polish the heads or change the cam out you will still have a crappy flowing engine into high flow cats.

yes i do know this but on this engine the less back pressure there is the more horsepower the engine would create. that would be the whole point behind high flow cats. i'm not wanting a discussion over this i've already read other posts i'm just asking if anyone knows where i could get some high flow cats.

IMO less back pressure requires a lot more revving, without back pressure the 3.0 will just fall on its face quicker... the engine needs back pressure to build up what little torque it has to begin with... but do what you want its your truck

You keep saying you know all of this but if you really did you would understand what I'm trying to tell you. It will be a waste of money on a stock engine. But whatever. Good luck.

Magnaflow makes replacement pipes with cats. You could save money buy getting universal cats but you would have to have them welded on.

No offense bud, but you sound like a total n00b. Take it from someone who tunes vehicles for a living.

Less backpressure helps so little with the stock heads & OEM calibration.

The reason "real tuners" eliminate cats is so they can take advantage of less backpressure to both advance timing closer to MBT, and run a leaner more powerful mixture without risking knock. The other advantage is fuel - you can run funky fun fuels that would normally damage your converter.

well for one i'm not new to the tuning world buddy i just spend my time tuning diesels. and yes my truck is tuned it was tuned on the dyno.

man, to be honest, I wouldn't bother with the magnaflow cats until it's time to replace the stockers...

At that point, you should JBA it, then do the Magnaflow y-pipe, and follow that with whatever your heart desires lol


just sayin that I don't think you'd be happy with the small gain you might receive AKA not the best bang for your buck.

Thats not a very good way of doing it. I only measure results on a dyno. Logging & street testing is the way I do 90% of my work, including customer work.

well the main reason i'm looking for these high flow cats is because i'm piecing together everything for when i put a supercharger on my truck. thats why i'm looking for them.

well so far the tune has worked out great thats how i do it with my customers and i havent had any problems so far

just order a magnaflow cat off amazon for $60. part# 94106. Will outflow the stock one no doubt.

Hello everyone.

Sorry for my ignorance, I really need help. I was confused if the magnaflow catalytic converter is pretty good?and also where to buy? I do some searched, inguiry and I tried it here Magnaflow Catalytic Converter . Anyone tried it here.? Any suggestions, please let me know. Thanks.
