Gas mileage

just got a 99 ranger reg cab with 3.0 and 5 speed. i filled up the tank after i bought it, the tank was empty took about 15 1/2 gallons anyways ive been driving around very little 60 miles on highway on the way home, 20 miles highway to work and back today, and about 30 miles around town. i reset trip when i filled up i have about 120 miles on the tank and gauge reads barely over HALF! i figured small truck small engine= good gas mileage. guess not.

what are yall getting?

'99 4x4 extended cab. I'm getting 24.7 on the highway. Not letting it get past 2500 rpm when i take off...watch traffic, so i don't have to use my brakes as much. Usually drive 60-65 on the highway.

no way in hell i can get close to 24mpg...i TRIED!

I drove all under 2500rpm, did some cruising at 60mph max...yea i got 18mpg. All under 2500, 65mph...18mpg...2500 and 70mph, about 17mpg. I gave up on trying to get any better mileage. Must be some factory freaks out there or something, i didnt see much gain (i was hoping atleast! 20mpg cruising at 60)

I ran 22ish MPG at 70-75MPH on the highway with my 3.0L/manual, 3.73 diff, ex. cab, 2wd. I'm sure if I had tried doing 65MPH I could have gotten close to 24.

On my recent trip I averaged 20 mpg. I was surprised, but it is the first long trip I've taken. Most of my driving is main street style.

No you don't have to change the hood that grille is a 03 grille. MudSlanger on here is about to do the exact swap your looking for, a 99 with a 01 grille and lights. If he gets off his lazy butt and goes do it you'll have pics soon. haha

We just took the 4.10s out of my dads 99 XLT 4x4 4.0L Auto. Put in 3.55s and it feels like the truck is barley running going down the highway. Its sweet. Not exactly sure on the mileage yet but definitely worth doing if you don't tow or have oversized tires

I have done no kind of mods to my engine. Had the heads redone late last year, thats it. I just keep all the fluids changed, and tires properly inflated. I think alot of it just has to do with driving habits.

I get 18 in the city, and at 75 mph 24 mpgs. here's how you do it. The oil cap in mine reads 5W20, well I switched to 10W30 synthetic. Step number 2: instead of using a cold air intake system I just use a K&N air filter STOCK REPLACEMENT. I did go to another 8.8 inch housing that has 4.10 gear ratios. That gave me lower rpms and more torque in the lower rpms. And despite beliefs I have tested this, for some reason my truck does better on MPGs when the tailgate is down. the ride is a little rougher but it just does better on fuel. Also keep your stock size exhaust pipe and switch to a flowmaster or any exhaust that you prefer. It really depend on which suspension package you have, tires etc. Also it depends on wether it's a manual or automatic tranny. The ultimate fuel saver: WEIGHT REDUCTION. Such as using fiberglass body panels etc. also try shifting alot sooner than normal. instead of letting it wind out get another gear a.s.a.p.. They calling it economy shifting in driving school.

04 5spd 3.0L. K&N FIPK and Mobil1 5W20 in it. 80% freeway driving with speeds usually around 70-80 when its open enough. dont go over 2500 much at all, and usually shift under 2K. i watch traffic and dont brake at every single little thing.

Average 21.2-22.2 mpg easily out of a tank. just got 21.9 with the FIPK that i just installed so we will see how well it does, if anything but so far its a little promising to get maybe 1mpg more out of the setup. i top off every time and fill till it clicks. it will then take 2.3 more gallons in the tank before its to the top of the filler neck. yeah i know its wrong but im not tripping any codes and i like the extra cruising range. I can go over 400 miles on a tank without a problem.

so theres my setup.
