Help figuring out which ECM to buy

Hello I have a 1993 Ranger V6 5 speed manual transmission 3.0 RWD and my ECM died. I have replaced everything except for the ECM and it misfires badly and sometimes doesn't even want to start and at high speeds (70 mph) it severely misfires but I'm getting no codes and my CEL works.

My question is my ECM as a white sticker that says F37F-12A650-CA but stamped on the other side it says E9AF 14A624 AA. Do I need the ECM number that ends in CA or ends in AA? My truck does not have a EGR system from the factory. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Welcome to the forum

E9AF14A624 AA is the 60 pin connector part number

F37F-12A650-CA would be correct number for 1993 Ranger ECM, the one you want to match

F3 = 1993, F1 = 1991, F5 = 1995
7 = Ranger
F = electronics Dept at Ford that is responsible for this part

12A650 = EVERY Ford ECM ever made, and it's still being used in 2024, its the ECM part number for all Fords

CA = what you want to match, Ford never published cross reference for these ending digits

Since 12A650 is the same for all Ford computers many sites don't include that number

So a matching part number for your 1993 3.0l MT might look like this: F37F-CA
No 12A650 included

One heads up, open your ECM up and check the 2 or 3 radial capacitors, usually blue, after 20 years they can leak and cause odd running issues
Looks like this inside a 1993 ECM: Ford EEC-IV
You can see the 3 blue caps, they are often at different locations

If you can see one or more leaked or top is bulging up, its failing, replace all 3, under $5 fix, when they "rebuild an ECM" thats all they are doing, replacing those caps, and cleaning up the circuit board

You will need to do that on a used one as well, unless you see Black capacitors then they were already replaced, and you should replace old ones with black ones, they last longer

I just checked the website you suggested and both the CA and AA seem to work in my truck. I also checked Rockauto.com and the CA on Rockauto.com is for the 1993 3.0 litre with a AT and 4x4 whereas mine is RWD and MT. I have checked other websites and they all say the same thing. What's the difference between the two ECM's?

RWD or 4x4 doesn't matter to the ECM until 2001 and up Rangers, so you can use either in a 1993

Manual or automatic matters, a lot
As does engine size
Also Calif or Federal matters, if it doesn't say "Calif" emissions then its Federal emissions

The suffix, in this case CA, is year specific as well, CA in 1992 and 1994 can mean different things
Most wrecking yards have kept a running list of what ECMs came from what years and models so tend to have best info

If a reseller has F37F-CA listed as 3.0l automatic then they are WRONG as you have an F37F-CA in your 3.0l manual Ranger, lol

As said, I have never seen a cross reference from Ford on what the suffixes mean in each year and each model

Thanks RonD for the clarification.
