HELP! Transmission Problems 4R44E 2000 Ranger 4x4 3.0 Flex Fuel

Hi All,

I have a 2000 Ranger 4x4 3.0 Flex Fuel with the 4R44E automatic transmission. When I put the transmission in drive it will not engage, I have to put the transmission in 2 first, them shift into drive, it then drives normally.

About a month ago, when I pull up to a stop sign, take my foot off the brake and apply the accelerator, the transmission clunks loudly before takeoff. You can feel that the power is not applied to the wheels until the clunk happens.

If you really ease into the throttle, the clunk is very light. If you apply throttle normally, the clunk is loud and sometimes accompanied by a grinding sound.

The clunk only occurs when the transmission is warm. When the transmission is cold, there is NO clunk.

Any ideas on what is going on?

There is also a delay of a few seconds between when you shift into 2 and when you actually feel the transmission engage.
