Irritating Rattle

Ive noticed this for a while, but it seems to have gotten worse as of late (after carrying a 1/2 ton of rock in it). It happens at about 1/2 to 3/4 throttle, i get this really annoying rattling sound. I can hear it even with the windows up, A/C on, and radio on. I cant describe it any better then a rattle. I dunno wtf it is. I checked the fluid caps n stuff like that , but everything seemed secure.

2002 V6 B3000 w/ auto trans

its a rattling sound, NOT a squeaking sound

How could you change the distributor cap and rotor when your truck has a coil pack?

You could have a loose heat shield or loose brake dust shield. Just have a friend make the rattle happen and you look for it.

I havent heard it at idle, only while driving. My truck only revs to around 3-3.5k in neutral or park though, so im not sure if it only happens after that

Is it pinging, or is it like an actual rattle...like something is loose? My K&N heat shield was clanking against the inside of the headlight assembly, after I looked at it I saw that the bugger didn't have the clamps on to keep it steady!

Sounds like you're going to have a hell of time trying to find that noise. At least you know it's coming from the front end though.

Good luck with solving that one.

I have an annoying as hell rattle/vibration at 1500rpm under throttle. Gotta be a heat shield or something. Drives me absolutely nuts and sounds like my truck is falling apart.

Pinging is engine detonation, pretty common with the 3.0 crowd. It sounds like the engine is trying to chug down more gasoline to go faster, but isn't get all it needs. It's kind of like the slurping sound you make when you are drinking something out of a cup... you keep trying to suck up that last bit of Frapp from Starbucks, but you're not getting enough of the good stuff. Except this is coming from inside the engine. It usually is heard when you are doing what you described and is quite annoying.

My suggestion is to install a 180 degree thermostat and see if that makes it go away. If it doesn't, at least your engine will run cooler :)

If anything else, make sure everything is sturdy and all screws are tightened in your engine bay.

Check the heat shield around the catalytic converter, those get loose and tend to be very annoying.

If it's a rattle, as if something is loose, I would start checking heat shields and the like on ANY part of the truck.

If it's a rattle like an engine detonation, I would check your plugs. Then your wires. Then, your MAF.

Pings are tough to figure out. Mine was my MAF, but others have had bad spark plugs, wires, etc.

A while back, my heat shield on my Cat fell off while was driving down the road. It used to dangle and sounded like a rattle coming from the front engine compartment.
