K & N Oil Filter
I've been using Fram oil filters for years and I was thinking about trying the K & N oil filter. Are those any good and will they cause any troubles??
|
i heard they are just as good as mobil 1 filters. ive used them before. i would think better than a fram.
|
Ya i use one..i love the way its got a 1" nut on the end so you can use a ratchet
|
I don't know about the guts of them. Doesn't the K&N have that thing attached to the front to allow a regular socket wrench to remove it. That is handy to have.
|
DONT use fram i used them becuase i liked the textured on the end to get it off. but if you cut them open they are horrible a stock ford filter is better. i switched back to the motorcraft one but K&N is good and so is mobil 1
|
Thanks for the advice. I'm due for an oil change so I'll try it.
|
I recommend staying away from Fram. The motorcraft ones are good. The K&N and Mobil 1 filters are even better, but not really necessary.
|
I only use the K&N Gold oil filter. I LOVE the socket end.
|
this helped i was going to do my oil next week, i used to think from was good but i will stick with the k&N filter
|
There was a report a while back that said that K&N was the only filter that had an anti-drain back device that actually worked. I'm not sure this is still the case, but at one point in time it was..
Besides that, the filtering element is far superior than your standard Fram or Motocraft. But like was said before, necisary.. eh.. probably not.. but that adapter for a socket is VERY VERY helpfull! And I'll keep buying them simply for that feature. That said, my truck has only had Mobil 1 from change 1 with Mobil 1 filters till a couple years ago when I switched to K&N. |
Does K&N make one that's good to 7-8 thousand miles??? Even more??? I use Synthetic and don't really want to pull off a filter, put up a new one, and keep going. Currently I'm using a Fram X2 filter....good for up to 7000miles.

oil will last as long as its clean and hasnt lost its detergent. period. with a bypass filter and good oil you can go 100,000 miles plus.
I use the K&N filter on my truck for 10,000 miles at a time with amsoil. i wouldnt use fram until it was a desperate situation |
10000...ya so no on that lol...

Isn't it possible to leave oil in for extend periods of time. 7k 10k miles if it is synthetic. The new BMW's go so far as to not even have set intervals. The car actualy tells you when it needs an oil change.

doesnt matter if its "clean", the reason u change oil is because the detergents and additives wear out. hell oil is slippery clean or dirty...
im with zach, i dont like to leave engine oil in longer than 5,000 miles. if u want info on filters, oil, or anyhting for that matter related to lubrication/filtration head over to bobistheoilguy.com . |
the detergents and addives in the extended drain oils are there to last the entire advertised mileage.
oil fails in three ways. it gets too dirty, it loses its addtives, it actually breaks down. there is no reason you can go on extended drains, as long as all the criteria are met!! |
i still dont buy it. if i used pure syn id still change it at 5,000.
of course the oil itself will break down but the additives go first, also the detergent package and how well its filtered will sdictate how long it'll stay clean...per say. |
So with the right oil, filters and a properly working engine you can go 7k miles befor an oil change?
My ford manual says that I only need to change every 5 and that was with the dealer oils. |
kyle, yes you can, and you can go much longer as well, again with the right oil and filter
