on my 3.0 there is this weird box. from the pcv there is a tube that goes to the bod up near the radiator and then to somewhere else. what is it, and its purpose?

Thats your conuter Valve. You have to have a Sprocket Turbulator to adjust it.

It used to be a carbon canister for control of evaporative emissions primarily from the fuel tank. The activated charcoal attracts and retains hydrocarbon molecules from the escaping vapor to be burned later when the engine is running. Yours looks rather wasted. There should be vented caps over those two holes to keep the charcoal dry.
