its the flux capacitor

V8 Level II Oct 12, 2006 08:49 PM

It used to be a carbon canister for control of evaporative emissions primarily from the fuel tank. The activated charcoal attracts and retains hydrocarbon molecules from the escaping vapor to be burned later when the engine is running. Yours looks rather wasted. There should be vented caps over those two holes to keep the charcoal dry.

You can buy a replacement from a Ford dealer, maybe elsewhere. It has no effect on how your truck runs or how long it will last. A new one would help the air pollution situation a tiny amount though.
