need guidence on my 2003 ranger 3.0L V6 3 cylinders not firing !!!
ok hello i have a 2003 ford ranger that i got half a year ago and it has had some suspension problems but now its engine problems of course. so one day i was driving to school and i got off the highway coming down from 60 mph and on the exit ramp i felt a jerking from what felt like the rear end but i just thought it was a bump anyway when i came to a stop at a stop it started violently shaking idling it sounded terrible and so then i made it to school like that but accelerating above 2000 rpms it would go away anyway i drove home like that on the back roads at low rpms and it was really low on power and at stops it would almost stall so i got it home and started investigating and i scanned it with my obd 2 and it came up with all these codes (see picture) it said cylinder 1 3 and 4 !!! wernt firing which i thought was crazy but makes sense why it was almost stalling anyway long story short i bout new spark plugs, coil, and wires and that dident do anything still shacking violently at idle and i can smell alot of gas when near the engine when its running and i listend to the injectors and they are clicking so i have spark and gas whats up then oh and i scanned it 2 times and the first it was only 2 misfires and the second it was 3 anyway sorry for the long post im new and i just want my truck running right again thank you.
How many miles do you have on it? Do you know any maintenance history prior to your ownership? As2011Supercab mentioned perform a compression test, also If it has 100K miles or more consider replacing the O2 Sensors, they are a wear item. Check your fuel filter and air filter also.
Just a few things to consider while troubleshooting.
ok yes I don't have a maintenance history but I do know it got a oil change when I first got it but its due for one now and it has 132,016 miles on it and I have replaced the air filter and used MAF cleaner on the sensor but maybe I have to replace it it probably has never been replaced and yes compression test is pending and fuel filter looks old but I am not sure how to check it probably due for replacing tho
When in doubt, replace the fuel filter it is not very expensive. Also do not confuse the Oxygen (02) sensors for the MAF sensor. You have a total of 3 (02) sensors 2 pre and one post.
If you do a search on this forum you will see an earlier post from me when I changed mine on my 2003 Ranger rear wheel drive, I also posted the part numbers needed. It made a big difference for me.
ok i have a update i got the o2 sensors and the fuel filter and now i am wondering if i should replace the o2 sensors first and then do the compression test or the other way around also there is a small oil leak i am seeing now and small hole on one of my catalytic converters any advice on how to proceed?
Replacing the O2 sensors will not affect the compression test but, it will affect the way the truck will run because it will be getting correct readings from the new O2 sensors and adjust air/fuel mixture better.
ok so another update I did a compression test on cylinder 1 and 2 1 was 178 and 2 was 157 pending the rest of the cylinders also I tested my MAF sensor by unplugging the MAF while the truck was running and it changed nothing when I unplugged it I don't know if that means replace it or not but i am going to because that could be the lean bank 2 code any more advice because it appears I have compression and fuel and spark soo what could it be !!??
They make a specific cleaner for MAF sensors, CRC is one of the leading manufacturers. Cheaper than replacing the MAF, I would recommend reading the instructions on the can (follow direction), try that first. If that does not work. Scan your truck for any fault codes again and see what you get. Also recommendation if you are going to replace the MAF sensor to only use genuine Ford part, no aftermarket.
