P0172 code + stuck fuel gauge versus high mpg- fixes, safe to drive?
howdy- 2003 Ford Ranger, V6 3.0L 2986cc 182vi FLEX MFI, 51k miles that 1 week prior received clean bill of health at oil change at ford service center. After filling gas from near empty, approximately 5-10 miles of driving later check engine light with P0172 code reading came on. Also noticed the dash fuel gauge remains at full when driving and near full (appropriate reading for current tank fill versus using very little fuel/higher mpg than normal) when off. Runs well in town conditions (not attempted highway since code on). Air filter replaced a month ago, checked MAF and all connects with air filter (have not yet cleaned MAF), have not checked fuel-related systems as don’t know how (yet!).
Have an appointment with Ford in two weeks but want to check 1) Is it safe to drive/am I risking damaging my engine, cat etc when driving rich and 2) what can I check, inspect +/- fix myself in the interim?
Thank you.
