Replace 3.0 W/Remanufacture?

2000 xlt 3.0 gas. 105k miles. Bad wrisk pin I believe (tapping noise that lets up with throttle release). Blown passenger side head gasket (leaks coolant from water jacket at front of head/block). Shop can't figure out what the tapping noise is after $800. Suggested I just put a new motor in for $5G installed.

I've never messed with one of these trucks / motors. Several other swap outs though. Finding remanufactured motors on line for $1,500 - $2,000. Recommended suppliers?

Any tips, estimated hours (R&R), threads, or warnings? Can novice do it?

Thanks, Rob

A guy just replaced his 3.0 after hydrolocking it. He went to http://www.karking.com/ for the engine. The first engine he got was bad so they are replacing it. You caould swap in a 4.0 or 5.0 but that requires other parts.

Not sure if this is legal, but cant you just turn it in to your insurance company and have them fix it?

I mean a $500 or $1000 deductible is better then 5k...

$5k for a block replacement, no custom parts, no trans, no fab work . . .

Our family owned the busiest auto shop in town for 15 years, and we weren't the cheapest by far. Last year we replaced a motor in a 03' Trailblazer, with materials and labour it came to just under $5800 . . . now keep in mind this is cost of a motor (slightly used), and labour on a vehicle a lot more work intensive and difficult.

I'd say ask around, 5k should include a rebuilt motor, a trans and replacement in US dollars.

My shop just R&R an engine for $2400.

5k is way to high. Wayyy to high. Labor should only be about a grand. Plus 2 for engine/misc. bits.

I blew my 3.0L while moving from the east coast to the west coast. I was quoted $5,000 for used engine replacement (80,000 miles?) and $8,000 for new engine. I ended up buying a rebuilt 3.0L from Rhino Engines for $1,700 with a $250 core charge.

I had never done an engine swap before, but I had some help from a member on RPS and we had it done in about 2 months after working on it during the weekends only.

Forget all that, just drop a 302 in it! They have kits galore for the conversion.

The shop better not have charged you $800 for a problem they cannot fix.
