RPM's

I just bought an 04 ford ranger about a month ago *details in sig*, and the previous owner raced it a few times at the local strip. He said when he was racing it he was shifting at like 6k rpms, I think that is horrible for it and I never run it that high. I should of gave it more thought before I bought it. Everything is fine on it and it runs great, but I was just wondering what he did could of hurt anything...

Thanks
Mike

i've heard the grenade point of the 3.0 is somewhere around 6300+ rpms. It's *possible* he could have done some minor internal damage, but if he only brought it up to 6k a couple times like he claims, you should be ok.

Now... if he was lying to you and was shifting at 6k all the time, that might be a little worse.

You could always get a leakdown test performed to make sure the cylinder integrity is ok.

EDIT: I was close... here is some info from BossRanger's website;

"It will not stand up to high RPM's for a prolonged period either (Sure, it can rev to 7,000 RPM's.... once!). The 3.0L Vulcan is incredibly reliable and will put out some serious numbers IF you approach it scientifically, keeping a realistic 6,000 RPM setting on the chip or ignition box/limiter (6,663RPM is the theoretical "grenade-point" with the current stroke, rod length and hypereutectic pistons)."

I dont rev my 04 any higher then 4,500 becasue it just sounds like it wants to blow up, and anything higher then that just causes more wear and friction.

I also noticed this;

"If you have rev'ed over 5,800 RPM's on factory single valvesprings, replace them now!"

i'm not sure if our (2001+) 3.0 engines have single valvesprings, but if they do, i'd get em checked!

There is a rev limiter in the PCM. Your engine is fine.

well it has a tuner, it bumped it to 6k, but like I said I never take it that high. I would think if the engine was older with higher miles then yes It would be bad, espically for the valve springs. Just the few times he did it though, on a low mileage engine I would think that id be fine. Doesnt use any oil, or anything and not a single tick. However for having 19k miles I would hope not LOL.

i cant rev past 55 because of the rev limiter i have only hit the rev limit 2 time one time was to see what my truck had when i first got it and the second time was racing a ford escort up a hill. my engine still runs fine i try not to take it past 3k but im only 17 and have to show off my truck a little so I might hit that rev limiter a few more times

if you have intake and exhaust it'll still pull up to the rev limiter.. but if it's all stock it'll feel like it doesnt have any more power up there to spare
