Sluggish acceleration

My 2008 3.0l rwd ranger has 259,000kms on the odometer. Just this past week I’ve been experiencing some weird things with my trans. First of all I’ve realized there is an issue with the trans, no codes so it is fully mechanical. Oil smells burnt. And I’m thinking maybe a torque converter.

Symptoms:
after the first snowfall up here this past week I feel a bump in my rear end, tire pressure is relatively the same and wheels are torqued down to 100 lb ft. There is sluggish acceleration, like it’s a struggle to get past 50. Moreover, it never did this before but I don’t hear any weird noises coming from under the truck. Speedometer is also out a few clicks but that’s been there since I bought it, I assume it was tuned to fit bigger wheels than the stock ones now.

if any of you could give me a little guidance as to what is wrong that would be great. I just want to know what I’m getting into before I take to to a shop.

If the speedometer is "off" a bit, it probably has not been adjusted for larger wheels, which means you are actually going faster than the speedometer is reading. If the trans fluid smells burnt, it won't be long before it makes you walk home. With that many miles on the truck, a shop is going to want to do a complete rebuild on the transmission. If you DIY, you may get by a while longer with a torque converter change and a lot less money.

Yeah I’d say it needs a rebuild, but the speedometer is showing a higher speed than what you are going. I have to go about 105km/h to be at 100km/h. I’m thinking a drop and swap, just buy a used trans with warranty and low km’s

That would would be from smaller tires than it's set for. and that's only 5% difference, you may not get it any closer.

would you know what a rebuild would roughly cost. I’m thinking of drop and swap a used one or sending it to a shop to be rebuilt. A drop and swap for me is $800 with warranty.

One company I found offers a used trannie for ~$1,100 and a rebuilt for ~$2,200.
