I would bring it to an auto parts store and have it scanned. Post up the code.

I don't think auto parts stores charge. Oriley's didn't look to when I was there last. Maybe just leave a CC or ID for the scanner.

Check engine light flashing means cylinder misfire. Look at your spark plugs wiring coil pack. Id get it read with a code reader asap

Well once you get the codes read it will probably give you more clues on whats going on and where to look. But i cant say for sure, it could be any number of things. How many miles on it and what work have you done to it?

Get the codes read first before you start throwing parts at it.

Kris is correct, a flashing CEL means a misfire, but it could be a number of things. A Code reader will be able to tell you what cyl. is mis firing and you should be able to start from there.
First by checking the plug, then the wire, finally the coil pack.
If you truck has over 100k miles and its never been tuned up (As far as you know) you may want to throw a set of plugs and wires in there.

iif the cel isnt flashing when you have the code read its probably not going to pull any codes. i know with my truck when it was doing that. i put two different code readers on it at two different times and it wouldnt pull any codes, because it wont store the flashing codes. when a solid cel comes on is the only time you'll be able to pull it. my truck flashed on and off at random times for a couple weeks and i just drove it till the code finally came on for good. thats when i pulled it and threw new wires on it. people are probably going to disagree with me, but i went through the same thing. i never could read a code until it stayed on permanently.

If it doesnt store the code then the flashes are the code...count the flashes...then a pause then count the flashes...
Like this...4...pause...3 pause long long pause...4...pause....3 pause....then u have a code 4-3....

Started my 2004 Ranger Edge up this morning and it made a very brief squeal like a loose belt. It had been parked in the grass overnight and we had a lot of rain so my first thought was just dampness. Now the check engine light stays on changing from steady to flashing and the idle is a little rough. I bought the truck new and it now has about 66,000 miles. Never had any major work done just the normal routine thing like regular oil changes, new tires, and brakes.
