Switch from Flex to standard fuel...

Has anyone swapped out the flex fuel tank for a standard fuel tank? I was told by my mechanic that the fuel pump is bad on my FlexFuel 3.0 (I still want to check fuel lines etc. before I believe him). From Ford it's $800 for the assembly!! What if the problem lies in whatever that canister is on the rear crossmember? I don't want to start throwing parts at the truck until I find the one that fixes the problem. (doesn't start or run and has very low fuel pressure, but runs from auxiliary fuel source)
I called the local junkyard and he had the whole tank and pump assembly for $100. When I got there I was disappointed to see it wasn't a flex fuel set up. Then I was thinking what if I just swap out the whole flex fuel tank for standard fuel tank. It would bypass the whole canister thing.
Any thoughts and/or comments greatly encouraged, thanks.

You would have to do more work than that to make it work. And you run the risk of buying it used and having it go bad again. They sell the whole unit for 400 dollars at autozone or oreillys .You can also get just the fuel pump for 150 dollars from them too.

would work no problem due to the fact that both are generally the same set up but you would have to avoid ethanol the best you can due to the fact that your pump isnt corrosion resistant anymore. Thats the major differnce between the flexF and the regF trucks in terms of the fuel system

I replaced the fuel pump on my 2000 ranger 3.0 and it was $336 at Oreilly's.
