TPS questions

What is the stock setting of a tps for a 2003 Ford Ranger? Also, what is the best number to set it at?

Acceptable closed throttle voltage from the TPS is 0.50v~1.25v. Most factory installed TPS's read close to 1v when the throttle is closed.

Also, the reason the range is so wide is that the system automatically deternines idle position using an internal algorithm. Since the TPS is actually a potentiometer, this was necessary to keep from having to make precision adjustment of the TPS.

Yup. It takes care of production variability, wear and the uncertainties of field installations (within reason).

Physically where is the TPS? I may want to clean the contacts because I think mine might be going bad due to some random throttle fluctuations I've been having. I'll have my foot barely on the gas and it will downshift and kick up the rpm's as if I just floored it, cept, I didn't... It's only happened twice, but I'm gettin worried about it.

The TPS is on the throttle body where it engages the end of the throttle shaft. I don't think you'll be able to disassemble it for cleaning. Your problem could be the TPS but could also be the IAC.
