I am looking to do plugs, wires, air filter, pcv valve on my 2000 ford ranger 3.0. I have done plugs and wires before but it was on a fwd 4cyl so the plugs were right on the front of the motor and easy to get to. I am wondering how hard the ranger is to change the plugs and wires on? Also what tools would I need to tackle this job a how to would be great. Also how do you test the coil pack or do you have to have a special tool. My Ranger has a bad miss to it at idle but smoothes out fine when you give it gas. It has 190000 miles on it and I do not know when plugs or wires were done so I figure I would start there unless you have other ideas. Also the truck does not have ses light on.

I personaly never had to do mine, but I can't imagine they are that hard get to. A must have is plug socket you don't want to snap one off in the block. A swivel socket may come in handy, A three and six inch extension. A Hayes or Chiltons manual will help out alot I think they are about $19.95 or something like that(been a few years since I bought one.)

Test the coil pack you could just pull the wire and have some one turn the key while you go thru them.

 

What can I say I am young and just starting to work on my own vechile and grew up with a single mom not a lot wrench turning going.

 

Get or borrow a torque wrench.

 

You'll learn just keep asking the questions. Like I said go get a manual for your truck, it will pretty much give a detailed description on how to completely tare down and rebuild your truck. That's the 1st thing I do when I buy a new well-used car.

If you pull the wires and turn the key just be careful you can get a good shock real easy.

I am going to suggest that if you know any mechanics see if they will help you work on your truck on Saturdays or something like that. That's kinda what I did in high school. He got to the point where I'd pull in he'd say what'd you break, I'd tell him and he'd say you know where the tools are let me know if ya need me. That's where I really learned what I was doing on a truck.
