Well, out of pure boredom, curiosity, and the constant posting of how some 4WD and/or lifted rangers are getting pretty good mileage I decided to stop by the dealership to have them reset my computer and look and my mileage.

They ran some tests on it, all of which passed. They then hooked it up to a machine and took it on the highway and found that it averages 15 - 18 MPG highway. They said that since it's the sports model it sits higher w/ bigger tires and that's why it gets less than the reported rating. As a result, there is nothing they can do... they said 15 - 18 highway is average.

I was "okay" w/ my mileage but the reaction that 15 - 18 mpg highway is acceptable truly intrigues me.

They gave me a receipt that basically says:
"Customer claims 15 MPG highway."
Result: "All tests passed. Driving test shows 15 - 18 MPG highway. Driving habit plays a large role in gas mileage"

Does this sound right?

 

for a 4.0 thats pretty close to right, i only get 19-20mpg on a xlt 3.0L

 

ya that sounds right time for a Bama Chips Xcal tuner and you will see some lovely gains

 

you have an 06 she isnt even broke in yet.

give it time, i got 12mpg for the first few months.

 

I get that on my lifted, 35" tire wearing, heavy duty rear axle Ranger. I'm getting just under 17 mpg (16.5 to 16.8 average) with my normal driving. About 18-19 on just highway. I'm running a 3.0 also, but I'm using all synthetic lubes (Amsoil) from engine to differential. My truck probably has 300+ pounds of tools and gear, and an 80 pound winch plus the heavy mount, etc. I think you should be doing better than that unless you have a heavy foot.

But they are worse until they break in, as Zach mentioned -- and they take a long time to break in. The 3.0 is all cast iron.

he also has the 4.0 so i wouldnt think he could pull numbers like the 3.0 anyway. maybe close.

either way he should average 16-17 in the city when its broke in.

 

I should read more closely, lol. I thought he had the 3.0...

 

One thing being overlooked is that this isn't me driving.

The machine tested it to get 15 - 18 MPG highway, not me. So I'm concerned that 18 MPG is at a nice 55 MPH and 15 MPG at something like 70 MPH.

It has a little over 2,000 miles on it, I thought the break in period was over? When's the break in period over?

 

I have the 4.0 and I get just under 22mpg on the highway. My only advantage may be my glasspacks.

 

break in is between 2000 and 5000 miles or so... it depends on your driving style and highway or not

 

Ahh didn't know that, good to know. Just curious, but what breaks the engine in faster (hard driving, slow driving, city, highway etc.) ?

Should I wait until after 5,000 miles to get a bama tuner?
