2.9>4.0 Issues

Hello,
Looking for an answer here, and I want to make sure this is the right place.
I'm in the middle of the famous 2.9 to 4.0 swap, and am using a motor from a 1992 Explorer for my 1990 Ford Ranger. I planned on using my transmission and clutch from the 2.9 for the time being until a 4.0 transmission comes up around here.
Now the problem is that the motor coming out of the 1992 Explorer turns out to be 1998 OHV 4.0.
Is it still possible to use my FM-146 tranny for now, and just get the required clutch and flywheel? I'm not worried about burning out anything as it'll be for DD'ing.
Thanks for any direction!

Welcome to the forum

Yes you will need the 8 bolt flywheel for 1998 4.0l
And you would use the 4.0l clutch setup in any case, 2.9l clutch would slip behind 4.0l

Not for nothing, FM-146 is not a "bad" transmission, but it is not a "good" one like an M5OD-R1(M5R1)
FM-146 will pack it in with 4.0l torque, yes even if you baby it, which you won't, 4.0l has the extra power and no one can resist that every once in a while.
And it just takes that "once" and you will be limping home or get towed

So weight the options of the work involved which will be wasted when you have to pull out the FM-146 to replace it with M5OD-R1 down the road
