2003 B4000 Overheated & Blown Heads?

Hey Ranger Teams, new to this forum as I'm trying to help out some family with their 2003 Mazda B4000 SOHC w/ 125K miles

It died on the highway when it overheated due to a blown seal in the thermostat housing dumping all the coolant against the intake manifold.
Won't start now, sputters a bit but when trying but only sounds like a couple cylinders are trying. Pulled the intake and replaced the T-stat housing and intake manifold gaskets since I was there. - Unrelated personal opinion: plastic parts in critical positions have no place on a hot engine :)
Pulled the drivers side plugs and found them dripping with fuel and very clean. Shot a little oil in them just in case they got washed down and got a cheap compression tester off of Amazon.

Passenger side was harder to get to so I didn't pull those as it kind of seemed moot at this point.
Also put the old rubber glove on the radiator cap and it bounces/flutters when cranking.

I'm assuming this all means a head gasket at a minimum and cracked block at worst.
Shop says it will be $2500-$3500 to fix if the heads/block are savable but no way to know until they tear it down first of course.

Do these engines normally just blow gaskets, warp heads, crack heads, crack blocks, etc.? I'm just trying to get an idea of what they are in for or if it's even worth it to try at this point.
