Wow. Couldn't FIND the OIL FILTER? Geez. I found mine on the Skyline, and it's backwards, upside down, sideways and crooked. Man...

I dont mean to hijack the thread, but does anybody know of an "elbow" or something to get the filter into a more workable position? The filter on my 02 is a %#$^@# to get off, I cant get my filter wrench on it.
Thanks

I either use the wernch with the adjustable metal band with a bendy handle, or just get a "gorilla grip" on it and grunt while you twist. Honestly, filters shouldn't be on THAT tight. I only put mine on hand tight, but I guess my hand tight is/could be tighter than others. I've seen them fail when put on too tightly.

lol, the long screwdriver trick has been my friend for 25K miles now. Boy it makes a mess, tho . All I do is put it on hand tight, which isnt too tight for me. But, come oil change time, I cant get it off. I thought maybe there was an easier way.

I run the K&N filter and just put a 1" socket on and an extension. I am thinking about relocating it when I get my new engine ready to go in though.

You can get a relocation kit from amsoil...SoundPer4mance can hook you on that

I use the end cap filter wrench a ratchet with a 3" extension.. comes off easy..
last time I couldnt find it so I just did my superman imitation and i got it off with a couple jerks. I normally put a little oil on the gasket when I put the filter on.
Tighten it down as hard as i (easily)can with hands and about 1/4 turn with the wrench after that.
A trick for the 4.0
Get a 2liter bottle cut it off about 2/3 the way up.
after the filter is loose but not leaking oil slip the 2liter bottle up completely over the filter Then loosen it by turning it with the 2 liter...
Oil will shoot into the 2 liter and you get 0 oil on the ground.. just a note..
after it drains the "pickup" part out of oil continue removing the filter
if you grip the 2 liter right it wont "splash" down into the bottom.
Then lower it slowly keeping in mind it will drain out for about another 20seconds before it goes dry(after the filter is off the engine)

I also have the fram "sure drain" I may replace it with a futamoto? valve instead though (faster)

Last 3 times i changed the oil i got a total 1 drop of oil on the driveway..
and 0 on myself. ok a bit on my finger from where i smeared the oil
on the new filter's seal

Edit: the thing about end cap wrenches if you have to get the one that fits
your filter.. there is a jagged one with about 100dents for the motorcraft..
or now that I'm using pure one.. its more like a 40sided hex with flats not jaggies.

Do any of you sonic blue guys use the pure-one filter? The filter looks like it is painted the same as the truck.

I am a firm believer in OEM products. i dont like aftermarket oil filters. get a spring loaded filter tool not the solid one that resembles a bowl. it has adjustable spring loaded jaws that grab the filter at the bottom i use one everyday at work on every car i service. no problems
