4.0 Sohc Mpg
 

I filled up with gas today. and turns out im only getting around 12 MPG.
My tuck is mostly stock other then a K&N intake.

Any Ideas how to improve mileage?

The best way to increase mileage is to change your driving habits. Be light on the gas. The best I have gotten in my 03 4.0 5 speed 4wd with 31s, Magnaflow catback exhaust adn cranked bars is 19.5MPG mostly highway.

i usually keep it under 2500-3000rpm at most.

I'm getting 13 or 14 in the city mines an auto, I guess im doing good since the Wrangler Silet Armors are suppose to decrease your mpg since there heavier.

How many miles on the truck? Are you doing the regular maintenance?

its right around 85k ive done oil changes ever 3000 miles since ive had it and i can only hope all the maintenance was done regularly before i got it.

Well I think the best I get in the city is about 14MPG.

May need a tune up. That's some pretty crappy mileage. I got about 15 or a little less when I drove in stop in go traffic in a busy city all the time. With my exhaust, intake, and tuner I get about 18.5 in the summer and about 17.5 in the winter with mixed driving.

it was supposedly done at the dealer before i bought the car, but i guess i should check it out.

Just filled up right before I got here to work and this last round was 19.13mpg all city driving. I've got a manual 4x4 with 31's. That 12mpg you got just doesn't sound right at all. Like Mike said you may need a tune up. Try running some lucas cleaner through it.

im going to have to try something. i keep the rpms down to try and increase mileage, and nothing seems to work. here i thought buying a truck with a K&N would get good mileage

i get 12.8 and thats not even factoring in the milage change because of bigger tires

or somethings wrong with your truck.
mine stock got like 16-17ish

K&N will give you like 1MPG difference but since it sucks in hot air you wont get any power or little from it. Opening the exhaust will help a bit. I still think you are on the gas too hard. If you can hear your intake growling then you are using to much throttle.

I have the 4.0 sohc auto with 4x4 and 4.10's and I get pretty crappy mileage. 14 sometimes 15 city and if i stay under 65 mph on the highway I can almost get 20. It was just recently tuned up, and I use synthetic oil and run fuel injector cleaner every oil change. Also my tires are always properly aired and i never go above 2,500 rms. Also it is stock with the exception of 2" lift. I am thinking of doing some seafoam or the motorcraft equivalent in the spring.
Any other ideas anyone?

its been cold and the intake growls alittle longer when i first start it up in the morning. i dont really let it warm up enough so maybe that has something to do with it. i was getting better gas mileage in warmer weather so it may just have something to do with the cold engine

i actully saw around 20 once, when i was driving home from VA where i bought it.

Actually you lose mileage by letting it warm up. You get 0.0MPG since you are burning gas but not moving. I let it idle for about 2-5 minutes then I take off and drive it easy until it warms up. Then I'll drive a bit harder but still take it easy. Try using less throttle and letting off the gas earlier. What hurts the most is getting back up to speed. Also coast down hills.

i'll do that half my drive to school is down hill and i usually just take my foot off the gas at the top and let gravity take over.

I live up North in the cold too, all i do is let it kick down to where it idles reg. and take off and i stil get 13-14 with the silet armor tires witch is suppose to decrease your mpg

Short trips will hurt mileage. But again with that many miles do some maintenance. Tranny flush, plugs and wires and maybe seafoam or that Motorcaft stuff.
